Full- time, fixed-term appointment 15/06/2025 - 14/06/2026 The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine is seeking a dedicated Research Assistant to join our collaborative research team in the Clinical Sciences Department. The unit is involved in teaching, provides technical assistance, and has a strong emphasis on research into the treatment and prevention of malaria in endemic countries. This is an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to support projects focused on the identification and refinement of interventions targeting bacterial and viral pathogens. The post holder will work as part of a collaborative research group, supporting a diverse research portfolio - including advanced ex vivo models of infection as well as controlled human infection studies. The research team are continually developing new methodologies to support research activities, and the post holder will contribute to these activities. Key responsibilities include: General laboratory activities Support production of new SOPs and risk assessments, as required Maintenance of laboratory stock inventory Maintenance accurate laboratory records Preparation stock compounds and reagents Cell culture Preparation of cell culture media Maintenance of mammalian cell cultures Viral stock propagation and storage Bacterial stock propagation and storage Experimental execution Perform experiments independently according to established protocols Support collaborative research activities within the group Support the work of research students Identify and report project risks and opportunities Communication Support paper writing activities - editing, formatting and referencing Communicate data via appropriate mediums Ideally you will be able to demonstrate: BSC or MSc in Biological Sciences (or related discipline) Experience generating laboratory data and maintaining accurate records Experience in mammalian cell culture Experience in viral culture Experience in bacterial culture Highly developed analytical skills Experience managing multiple projects Ability to work independently with minimal supervision (For a full list of essential and desirable criteria please refer to the job description and person specification) Informal enquiries can be directed to shaun.pennington@lstmed.ac.uk Additional benefits of joining LSTM: 30 days annual leave, plus bank holidays, plus Christmas closure days Generous occupational pension schemes Government backed “cycle to work” scheme.
