The role involves designing, programming, testing, and commissioning automation systems for automotive production, assembly, and test equipment. This is a hands-on engineering position with full lifecycle involvement in cutting-edge automotive manufacturing projects. Key Responsibilities Design & Development Develop automation solutions using Schneider PLC platforms (Modicon M221/M241/M340/M580 or equivalent). Produce functional design specifications, control philosophies, I/O lists, and system documentation. Create and modify HMI applications using Schneider tools (e.g., EcoStruxure Machine Expert / SoMachine). Configure industrial networks including Modbus TCP, CANopen, EtherNet/IP, and other fieldbus systems. Project Delivery Support the full project lifecycle: concept, design, software development, FAT, SAT, and commissioning. Conduct on-site commissioning at automotive manufacturing facilities, both in the UK and occasionally abroad. Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and process engineers to ensure integrated system performance. Ensure all automation systems meet project specifications, safety requirements, and quality standards. Diagnostics & Support Troubleshoot PLC, HMI, and network-related issues during installation and production support. Support upgrades, retrofits, and optimisation of existing automotive control systems. Provide technical assistance to production, maintenance, and project engineering teams. Required Skills & Experience Strong, hands-on experience with Schneider PLC programming (EcoStruxure Machine Expert / Unity Pro). Experience developing HMI applications on Schneider or similar platforms. Solid understanding of industrial automation, control loops, sequencing, and machine safety. Experience working in automotive automation, such as body-in-white, assembly, testing, robotics, or powertrain systems. Knowledge of industrial communications (Modbus, CANopen, Profibus, Ethernet-based protocols). Ability to read electrical schematics, P&IDs, and mechanical drawings. Excellent problem-solving skills with a practical, engineering mindset. Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel when projects require it. Preferred Qualifications HNC/HND or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or similar. Experience with robotic systems (ABB, Fanuc, KUKA) used in automotive environments. Knowledge of machine safety standards (ISO 13849, SIL, PL). Understanding of automotive OEM and Tier 1 manufacturing processes. Experience with drives, servo systems, or vision systems.
