We are currently recruiting for: Teaching Assistant
Nugent House School is the main education element of Nugent Care, one of the largest charities in the Liverpool City Region, focused on supporting those in need. The charity goes back 140 years, founded by Father James Nugent, an early advocate of social justice in the city.
Nugent House School is an independent special school, registered for up to 60 students aged between 7 and 19. Pupils are referred to the school by their local authorities in response to their needs not being met in other educational provisions. We currently have students referred from the vast majority of ‘close’ local authorities (St. Helens, Warrington, Knowsley, Lancashire, Halton, Liverpool, Wirral, Sefton & Trafford) as well as further afield (L.B. Newham). Many students have experienced significant negative prior experiences of education, including extensive periods of non-attendance.
All students at the school are placed with an EHCP, with SEMH identified as the primary placement need.
We offer education to a wide range of pupils with a variety of additional needs. We take great pride in helping them achieve their potential and support them either on a one to one basis or within a small group.
We are now recruiting for teaching assistants to help support our young people with their educational provision both in the classroom or external to the school.
Responsibilities and Duties
As a Teaching Assistant, your role is to support children with their learning and general wellbeing to ensure every child has the best opportunity to reach their full potential in a caring and safe environment. Where necessary this may include supporting with positive behaviour management adopting a tailored approach to the individual child.
You will be expected to establish a warm, caring and supportive relationship with pupils in order to support them feeling safe and enabling them to enjoy and learn during their time at the school. To promote and encourage independence and personal development in pupils and maintain high expectations of behaviour at all times.
You will support the class teacher and contribute to providing high quality, educational activities and the teaching of a broad and balanced curriculum aiming at pupils achieving their full potential in all areas of learning.
Skills and Qualifications;
• Experience working within an educational setting or working with young people with SEMH/ASD/EBD
• Ability to manage challenging behaviour and remove obstacles to learning that the young people may use to impede their education
• Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work both in a team and independently and the passion to make a difference in young people’s lives
• Understanding of the Safeguarding principles and Child protection procedures
• Able to maintain a purposeful, organised and supportive environment that works in conjunction with lessons plans
• Using strategies and understanding of individual capabilities to support the pupil’s learning goals in conjunction with the Teacher/Tutor
