The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Engineer to join our Consulting Rail team. The role is located in shared office locations in Birmingham, Derby, York, Bristol, Manchester, and Cardiff, and we welcome applications from candidates across these regions.

Key Projects

As a Design Partner on significant rail infrastructure projects, you will support programmes such as Northern Powerhouse Rail, Eastern Routes Partnership, North West & Central Framework, Core Valley Lines, Trans‑Pennine Route Upgrade, and Cardiff Crossrail. Our in‑house team delivers design solutions across all Network Rail stages and disciplines, driving connectivity, passenger experience, and rail safety and efficiency.

The role

Our Engineers play an important part within the Consulting Rail Design team and work alongside clients, including Network Rail. As a Civil Engineer, you will support the Senior Engineer in the design and delivery of a variety of rail schemes and guide junior staff to ensure high‑quality outcomes.

Responsibilities

* Work in a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards, client requirements, and quality, cost and programme criteria.
* Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation for scheme deliverables, overseeing junior staff and taking responsibility for their actions.
* Liaise with client and supplier representatives at the peer level, attend progress meetings, respond to queries and support client communication.
* Manage a small, locally based, single‑discipline technical team and take responsibility for the delivery of the workload.
* Contribute to bid preparation and the general work‑winning function.
* Work on site, either visiting or as a full‑time temporary role, and include out‑of‑hours working.
* Assume the role of people manager when required by the business.

What you will bring to us

* Relevant experience in Rail engineering and the ability to work in a commercial, customer‑focused way that achieves programme performance targets and generates income.
* Confidence to work under minimum supervision, and competence to check the work of others and supervise less experienced staff.
* Good understanding of DMRB, other national standards and best‑practice guidance, local standards, and the CDM regulations relevant to Rail design.
* Ability to support the preparation of briefs for fee quotes for service delivery when required.
* Capability to deliver on time, within budget and to the required quality.
* Commitment to keep up to date with industry best practice and apply it within the team where appropriate.
