The Role As a Personal Tax Manager, you'll take ownership of a substantial portfolio of personal tax clients, providing expert technical advice and strategic tax planning whilst building strong, lasting client relationships. You'll work closely with Partners, leading the delivery of exceptional service to high-net-worth individuals, business owners, landlords, and other complex personal tax clients. Your Key Responsibilities: Senior Client Portfolio Management Manage and develop your own substantial portfolio of personal tax clients, acting as their trusted advisor Prepare and review complex self-assessment tax returns, tax computations, and advisory work Proactively identify client needs and opportunities to add value beyond compliance Handle sophisticated tax affairs including multiple income streams, capital gains, and inheritance tax planning Advanced Technical Tax Expertise Deliver proactive, strategic tax planning advice to optimise clients' tax positions Lead clients through complex tax matters including HMRC enquiries, disclosures, and investigations Provide expert guidance on Making Tax Digital compliance and implementation Advise on sophisticated personal tax issues including trusts, estates, and succession planning Stay current with legislative changes and communicate implications to clients Team Leadership & Mentoring Supervise, coach, and develop junior and semi-senior team members Conduct performance reviews and provide constructive feedback Lead by example in technical excellence and client service standards Contribute to recruitment and training initiatives Business Development & Client Growth Actively identify and pursue new business opportunities Build and maintain strong relationships with referral sources Represent the firm at networking events and within the business community Contribute to the firm's thought leadership and marketing initiatives Practice Management Ensure efficient workflow management and adherence to deadlines across your portfolio Maintain high standards of quality control and file management Support Partners with practice development and strategic initiatives About You Essential Requirements: Experience & Qualifications Minimum 5 years' UK practice experience within a chartered accountancy firm ATT qualified, ACCA/ACA qualified, CTA qualified, or QBE with substantial relevant experience Proven track record managing complex personal tax portfolios independently Demonstrable experience supervising and developing junior team members Technical Skills Expert knowledge of personal taxation legislation and current developments Extensive experience with complex self-assessment returns, including multiple income sources, capital gains, and inheritance tax Strong understanding of tax planning strategies for high-net-worth individuals and business owners Experience handling HMRC enquiries, disclosures, and investigations Familiarity with IRIS Practice Suite or CCH software (desirable but not essential) Knowledge of trusts, estates, and succession planning (desirable) Personal Attributes Exceptional communication skills – confident building relationships with high-net-worth clients and senior stakeholders Strong commercial awareness and business development mindset Excellent time management with ability to prioritise competing demands effectively Natural leader and mentor – able to inspire and develop team members Proactive problem-solver with a solutions-focused approach Confident working autonomously whilst knowing when to escalate Comfortable managing client expectations in high-pressure situations Professional, credible presence with Partners and clients alike What's On Offer Competitive Package Salary: £45,000-£55,000 (dependent on experience and qualifications) Company pension scheme Death in service benefit Performance-related bonus potential Work-Life Balance Hybrid working: Flexible split between Stockport office and home Flexible working hours to suit your lifestyle Full-time or part-time options considered for the right candidate Career Development Full study support for further qualifications (CTA or equivalent) Comprehensive training opportunities and CPD Clear career progression pathway to Senior Manager and Partner level within a Top 50 firm Genuine opportunity for long-term advancement and equity partnership Culture & Environment Join a thriving, supportive team within a prestigious firm Work with a diverse, high-quality client base including high-net-worth individuals Be part of a firm that values technical excellence, innovation, and client service Collaborative culture with genuine investment in your success About Our Client Our client is a well-established Top 50 chartered accountancy firm with a reputation for delivering exceptional service to a diverse range of clients.
