Job Details

Job title: Staff Nurse (Mental Health)

Location: Salus / Haytor Ward, Torbay Hospital, Lowes Bridge, Torquay, Devon, TQ2 7AA

Band: Band 5

Salary: £31,049 to £37,796 per year

Contract: Permanent

Working pattern: Full-time, Part-time, Flexible working

Eligibility: Overseas applicants must have UK NMC pin number to be considered


Job Purpose & Responsibilities

* To assess care needs, develop, implement and evaluate individual care plans.
* To provide named nurse role to people who use our service.
* To promote and improve quality of service provided.
* To manage the unit in the absence of Ward Manager / Team Leader.
* To participate in the internal rotation system including weekend working.


Duties & Responsibilities

* Be a proactive, skilled member of the ward multi-disciplinary team.
* Have knowledge and experience of providing individual and group clinical/therapy work.
* Demonstrate effective leadership and provide advice and guidance to non-qualified staff and students.
* Provide and maintain therapeutic relationships with service users, respecting rights, dignity and opportunities for growth.
* Provide cross-cover to other mental health units on the same site when clinically needed.
* Work in line with safeguarding protocols and required training.
* Demonstrate working knowledge of Mental Health Act 1983 (and updates), Mental Capacity Act 2005 (including DoLS), Care Programme Approach, and NHS and Community Care Act 1990.
* Work to NICE and NMC guidelines and standards; comply with Trust policies and procedures.


Skills, Communication & Relationships

* Excellent written and verbal communication; proficient in electronic systems.
* Maintain professional relationships with the multidisciplinary team, carers, families and user groups.
* Liaise with GP, Social Worker, Housing and other professionals.


Planning, Organisation & Leadership

* Act as shift co-ordinator and, when required, act up in the absence of the Ward Manager.
* Supervise others in line with Trust policy.


Care, Documentation & Compliance

* Act as named nurse for a cohort of patients; assess complex needs and update RiO electronic records.
* Provide robust risk assessments and maintain professional practice in line with NMC, government and Trust policies.
* Maintain accurate documentation; engage with electronic recording systems and reporting for continuing care panels, etc.


Professional Development & Policy

* Be aware of national and professional developments; participate in ongoing training and education; demonstrate evidence-based practice and participate in audits/research.
* Promote service improvements and engage in service changes with a positive professional attitude.


Finance, Resources & Supervision

* Follow Trust policies on handling monies and property; manage resources sustainably.
* Provide supervision and appraisals; mentor students; participate in preceptorship for newly qualified staff where appropriate; participate in audits.


Other Tasks

* Demonstrate knowledge of NMC code of conduct; understand government health and social care policy; maintain PREP requirements; report any incidents to Ward Manager/Team Leader; engage in ongoing supervision and professional development.


Qualifications & Experience

* Essential: RMN/Registered Nurse (Mental Health) with current registration; willingness to complete Trust mandatory courses and relevant physical interventions training (with adjustments if required).
* Essential: Experience of Adult and/or Older Persons mental health nursing and the nursing process.
* Desirable: Experience of working with people with a diagnosis of dementia.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

* Essential: Ability to form positive therapeutic relationships; ability to assess situations, make decisions, coordinate and organize appropriate responses; ability to risk assess and plan nursing care.
