An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Nurse with cancer leadership experience to join the Cancer Centre at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust supporting the Lead Cancer Nurse and Head of Cancer Performance in the ambition to provide high quality timely cancer care and to support and achieve the objectives set out within the National Cancer Plan.
The successful applicant will be expected to work with a motivated and enthusiastic team to influence Cancer Care across the whole Trust.
As a strong leader, the post holder will work with teams across the Trust to ensure that our cancer patients at NUH have the best possible experience supporting the Lead Cancer Nurse in embedding projects such as Personalised Care and ACCEND throughout all our cancer pathways.
You will need to be a registered Nurse with experience in cancer care at a senior level, an enthusiastic and conscientious team player with the ability to engage and influence Multi‑Disciplinary Teams in providing first class cancer care provision.
Professional Leadership
* Provide strong, visible, leadership skills, energising, inspiring, and empowering clinical and non‑clinical staff in the pursuit of a shared vision to ensure the efficient, effective, timely and safe delivery of cancer services including being a credible nursing leader, embedding a variety of projects that positively impact the quality and timeliness of cancer care.
* Lead on promoting a better understanding of how professionals can work together to develop a service to support patients and individuals to access appropriate services.
* Work closely with all staff responsible for cancer services delivery to ensure collaborative working contributing to the achievement of NHS England monitoring and Trust objectives especially cancer performance targets and high quality cancer care.
* Using evidence based and reflective practice, influence good practice trust wide across cancer services, acting as a change agent and a professional resource for multi‑disciplinary teams to assist in the delivery of national and local standards and objectives.
* Maintain professional competence, authority and credibility, being highly visible to patients, carers and staff, actively seeking feedback about the effectiveness, efficiency and quality of cancer services at NUH.
* Provide specific clinical guidance and expertise to tumour site specific teams as required, promoting the importance of delivering timely care to our cancer patients and the importance of embedding Personalised Care in Cancer services.
* Champion new approaches and innovative solutions for future development of services and professions and work with clinical teams across the Trust to deliver.
* Provide direct line management of the Quality Surveillance team ensuring a robust programme of work and supporting and fostering a continuous improvement cycle of the quality surveillance process and cancer services as a result of reviews.
* Develop, implement, and update procedures and policies to ensure the smooth running of cancer services across the trust.
* Ensure and actively provide support mechanisms for all staff within cancer related clinical areas to enable structured reflection. Promote the use of clinical supervision, the development of supportive networks, mentoring and coaching, and, in collaboration with clinical leaders, actively encourage staff to participate in various methods of reflective learning and practice.
Service Delivery and Improvement
* Work closely with multi-disciplinary teams across the trust, and the public to examine the patient’s journey and work in collaboration with members of the multi‑professional team to redesign processes in order to deliver an improved and timely patient experience.
* Act as a clinical advisor and expert nursing resource to Cancer Pathway Coordinators, MDT coordinators, and managers working within cancer services for any queries relating to patient tracking of patients on cancer pathways.
* Work with commissioning colleagues influencing the seamless pathways in primary and secondary cancer care.
* Deputise for the Trust Lead Cancer Nurse and, if required, the Head of Cancer Performance as appropriate, attending meetings, relaying and presenting information to a variety of professional groups in the absence of any members of the Cancer Centre Leadership Team.
* Work collaboratively with key stakeholders across primary and secondary care to support the delivery of all aspects of cancer services including the personalised care agenda.
* Work closely with the Specialty Teams and Cancer Centre staff to maintain and improve cancer standards, maximising opportunities to develop new ways of working based on best evidence, and that services have a constant ambition to meet or exceed healthcare standards and specific standards for their service e.g. Cancer Wait Times, and the NHS Long Term Plan.
* Demonstrate and report the impact of improvement initiatives specifically around quality, safety and cancer target compliance through the appropriate internal and external cancer governance structure.
Education and Development
* Advise on cancer specific resources to deliver patient care, activity levels and Trust objectives.
* Be responsible for ensuring systems are in place for the collection and analysis of information required to manage workload, patient activity, resources, equipment and supplies and related financial information and to be aware of factors affecting the service area’s ability to meet the targets.
* Develop and implement a performance monitoring and management system that empowers specialty teams to continuously monitor, review and reset clinical standards.
* Contribute to reporting progress against patient experience, performance and quality key performance indicators to the Cancer Quality Group, Cancer Taskforce and Cancer Board.
* Provide accurate and timely reporting of progress within the provision of performance against targets for the agreed key performance indicators/metrics.
Research and Audit
* Work with the network of colleagues to implement systems that promote the dissemination and sharing of evidence‑based development, which enhances the application of knowledge and skill thereby improving the quality of cancer patient care.
* Provide clinical challenge in a positive manner of working practices promoting a culture of continuous improvement across cancer services.
* Actively encourage the use of clinical and other performance information to improve the quality of patient care.
* Support nursing staff and Allied Health Professionals to initiate and participate in research and support the application and evaluation of current research findings, ensuring that systems are in place to provide nurses and other clinical staff with the skills to translate evidence‑based findings into practice.
* Ensure appropriate systems are in place to develop, implement and monitor agreed standards, guidelines, policies, and practices to support care provision and service delivery and regularly review the results with colleagues, facilitating the implementation of changes to practice.
* Ensure a programme of audit is in place to assure that key policies and practices are being implemented appropriately.
Policy and Governance
* Implement systems and processes that create and maintain a culture which actively promotes the contribution of staff to the development and delivery of clinical governance and risk management objectives.
* Work closely with the Lead Cancer Clinician and Lead Cancer Nurse and the Clinical Governance team to ensure that appropriate mechanisms are in place for effective assessment and management of cancer focused clinical and non‑clinical risk. Actively contribute to the Trust’s risk register and the ongoing management of Datix incidents.
* Assist in the development of a systematic process to review and report negative outcomes from cancer treatment including a thematic review and subsequent action plan to address themes.
Communication
* Work across organisational and professional boundaries, to implement new solutions to facilitate a smooth cancer patient journey to prioritise timely cancer treatment and a quality patient care experience.
* Promote a culture where staff feel empowered and accountable for service improvement at a local level.
* Facilitate effective multi‑professional care across primary and secondary care and act as the lead Clinical advisor within relevant multi‑disciplinary teams.
* Build and develop improved links with the community and other provider units, aiming for a seamless service across boundaries and actively promoting work that tackles health inequalities.
* In conjunction with colleagues across public and private sectors, health and social agencies, support the Government’s strategy to tackle poor patient experiences and support areas of work that have a positive impact on hard to reach areas.
* Provide expert cancer leadership and represent the Trust at local, regional and national level.
* Be a key member of the Cancer Centre Management Team, attending and contributing to team meetings and offering clinical advice and support regarding patient pathways and escalations wherever required.
Education and Training
* Ensure that appropriate mechanisms are in place to achieve the robust induction and workplace orientation of specific cancer staff new to the service area.
* Explore opportunities for multidisciplinary training, education and development.
* Participate in personal professional development programmes, taking every opportunity to develop new knowledge and acquire new skills to ensure that personal knowledge, awareness and attitude to clinical services are continually updated and reflect leading edge practice.
* Ensure that systems are in place across the service area to identify the training and development needs of all staff working within cancer services and to provide an annual training and development plan which reflects workforce needs and meets service and professional requirements for life‑long learning.
* Support the Lead Cancer Nurse in the development, delivery and implementation of the ACCEND framework in cancer services across the Trust.
* Maintain a culture of sharing good practice and education of Clinical Nurse Specialists and Allied Health Professionals working within cancer services by supporting the Lead Cancer Nurse in the development and effective running of an education forum.
Qualifications and Experience
* Registered Nurse with senior level experience in cancer care.
* Demonstrated experience in leadership and change management within oncology or related clinical settings.
* Strong analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.
* Knowledge of National Cancer Performance targets and experience embedding Personalised Care, ACCEND and related initiatives.
