Role Overview
We are looking to appoint an English Teacher to join a secondary school in Bridgwater on a full-time, permanent basis from September. The successful candidate will deliver well-planned lessons across KS3 and KS4, helping students develop strong reading, writing, analysis, and spoken language skills in a purposeful and inclusive classroom environment.
The role would suit a qualified teacher seeking a permanent post, an ECT ready to begin their career with strong departmental support, or an experienced practitioner looking to contribute to a school community committed to high standards and excellent outcomes.
Core Responsibilities
* Deliver engaging and well-sequenced English lessons that align with the national curriculum
* Teach across KS3 and KS4, adapting resources and support to meet a range of learning needs
* Build students' confidence in reading, writing, and spoken communication through effective modelling and questioning
* Assess progress accurately, provide constructive feedback, and contribute to reporting as required
* Support students with GCSE preparation, including exam technique, revision planning, and targeted intervention
* Maintain high expectations for behaviour, learning, and classroom routines
* Work closely with colleagues in the English department to share good practice and promote pupil achievement
* Uphold safeguarding expectations and foster a classroom culture where all students feel safe, valued, and included
Required Skills & Behaviours
* Strong subject knowledge with the ability to teach both English Language and Literature confidently
* Consistent and effective classroom management with a calm, professional approach
* Ability to break down complex ideas clearly and support learners with differing literacy levels
* Secure understanding of assessment and feedback strategies that help accelerate progress
* Well-organised approach to planning, preparation, and marking
* Positive communication skills and a collaborative approach to working within a department
Qualifications & Experience
* Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in the UK or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification
* Previous experience teaching English in a secondary school setting, ideally across KS3 and KS4
* Good knowledge of current safeguarding responsibilities and statutory guidance
* Experience supporting students preparing for GCSE English Language and/or Literature is desirable
* Right to work in the UK and an enhanced DBS on the update service, or willingness to obtain one
