Roles
We are seeking two Consultant Respiratory Physicians – one with a focus on lung cancer and pleural disease, the other on TB / complex lung infections. Each consultant will be based at Wexham Park Hospital with respiratory clinics largely held at King Edward VII Hospital in Windsor.
Overview
Our integrated respiratory team has recently secured £1.2 million which has expanded our respiratory virtual ward. We work closely with our award‑winning Acute Integrated Respiratory (AIR) nursing team. We operate a busy NHSE‑funded latent TB new entrant screening programme and were one of the initial pilot sites for lung cancer screening, now rolled out nationally. The department is inclusive and supports entry‑level CCT holders to develop sub‑specialty interests, particularly research.
Team Structure
The respiratory service includes 3 Respiratory SpRs, 1 GIM rotational SPR, 2 IMT 3s, 7 SHOs and 3 FY1s, a dedicated 16‑bed medical high‑dependency/RSU and NIV unit, a closed general ICU, and a medical day‑unit for pleural procedures, day‑case biopsies, IV antibiotic initiation and support for long‑term chest drains. Specialist nurses cover cancer, TB, non‑invasive ventilation, sleep, airways disease and ILD. Community respiratory teams service Windsor, Maidenhead and Berkshire.
Approximately 200 bronchoscopies and 200 EBUS procedures are performed per year. We have recently introduced a navigational bronchoscopy service with interventional radiology, thoracic ultrasound and sub‑regional support for tunneled chest drain placement. We run 2–3 pleural disease clinics weekly.
Multidisciplinary Working
The lung cancer multidisciplinary team comprises chest physicians, a radiology team, an oncologist based at Mount Vernon Hospital who runs clinics and oversees chemotherapy at Wexham Park, and a thoracic surgical team based at Harefield and the Royal Brompton Hospital.
