We're seeking experienced Healthcare Support Workers to join our Operating Theatres! We have vacancies in our Emergency & Vascular Cluster, Neuro Spinal Cluster & Plastic & Breast Cluster.

About the Role

This role will be an integral member of a multidisciplinary team, supporting Scrub Practitioners, Operating Department Practitioners, Surgeons, and Anaesthetists in advanced operating theatres. You will assist with a variety of complex surgical procedures while maintaining a strong focus on patient care throughout the operation. You will be caring for patients while they are undergoing surgery and will also be involved in the preparation and maintenance of the theatre throughout the operating list, cleaning and infection control procedures.


Responsibilities

* Communicating with the whole theatre team, including participating in team safety briefs.
* Ensuring good infection control procedures are being followed.
* Preparing the theatre before procedures, cleaning the theatres between procedures and at the end of the day.
* Understanding the equipment that is being used and being able to position and check it correctly.
* Collecting and instruments checking disposable items with a registered practitioner that will be used during surgery.
* Assisting the scrub practitioner to prepare the instruments ready for surgery, including taking part in essential safety checks.
* Helping with the safe collection of clinical specimens.
* Assisting with patient documentation.
* Participating in all aspects of the patient's care such as correctly positioning them for surgery, maintaining their privacy and dignity, keeping them warm and safe during surgery.
* Sitting and talking with patients who are undergoing procedures under local anaesthetic as a way of supporting and reassuring them.
* Helping ensure that patient safety is at the heart of all we do in theatres.
* Delivering clinical and therapeutic care to patients as required within set protocols/policies and within the scope of the Health Care Support Worker remit.
* Participating in patient assessment (with direct supervision and after appropriate delegation from the Registered Practitioner/Assistant Practitioner) to deliver high standards of care.
* Performing area‑specific clinical competencies to enhance the delivery of patient care/therapy.
* Under supervision, following individual care treatment plans, and reporting any changes immediately to the Registered Practitioner/Assistant Practitioner.
* Working effectively as part of a team.
* Maintaining effective communication with patients, relatives and members of the Multidisciplinary team regarding all aspects of care, demonstrating a variety of communication skills in accordance with the patient group.
* Contributing to clear, concise patient records and documentation adhering to national standards and trust policies and procedures.
* Obtaining consent prior to giving care/therapy in accordance with Trust Consent Policy.
* Providing information to other members of the Multi‑disciplinary team on the care/therapy provided.
* Undertaking transfer/escort of patients from one area to another after appropriate delegation from the Registered Practitioner within their scope of practice.
* Providing clinical care/therapy in accordance with infection prevention and health and safety policies and procedures.
* Promoting Health Education specific to the clinical area and in line with national and local policies.
* Initiating and participating with cardio‑pulmonary resuscitation procedures.
* Ensuring the clinical area is prepared and maintained as appropriate to individual patient needs.
* Maintaining the work environment in line with Trust Infection prevention and Health and Safety policies.
* Identifying requirements for and availability of equipment stores, CSSD as appropriate for patients’ clinical care/therapy.
* Identifying and taking appropriate action when equipment malfunctions.
* Identifying potential risk issues that could affect patient health or social care needs.
* Being familiar and complying with all Trust Policies and Procedures.
* Acting at all times in a manner that illustrates respect for privacy, dignity and confidentiality.
* Exhibiting professional behaviour and attitude at all times, demonstrating excellent customer care skills and ensuring actions support equality and diversity.
* Acting within limits of own competence, ensuring actions support the care, protection and well‑being of others.
* Maintaining responsibility for identifying own continuing educational and development needs, including audits of own work practice, formulating a personal development plan and participating in the annual appraisal process.
* Ensuring all required mandatory training is undertaken in line with Trust policy.
* Participating where needed, during investigations relating to incidents involving patients and/or staff.
* Using IT systems for data collection, patient records, information and treatment investigative requests.
* Effectively utilising resources within departmental budgetary requirements.
* Ensuring correct procedures are followed in the event of an incident or accident involving patients, staff or visitors.
* Participating in ward and departmental meetings.
* Participating in the induction and orientation of newly appointed staff, learners and other visitors to the ward or department.
* Ensuring safe custody, return or disposal of patient property in accordance with Trust policies.


Qualifications

Enthusiastic and eager to develop, you should either be willing to work towards or already have achieved a Level 3 NVQ or QCF Diploma in Healthcare. A strong commitment to continuous learning and professional development is essential.


Salary and Visa

Please note, this role does not currently meet the minimum £25,000 salary threshold required for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship, effective from 9th April 2025. Although higher pay points may be available depending on relevant NHS experience, most new appointments commence at the lower band, which falls below this threshold.
