Job summary

The Matron of Labour Ward, Birth Centre, Emergency Obstetric Unit & Triage is fundamental to ensuring the provision of high quality, effective, service driven maternity care, and is recognised as being critical to the successful delivery of maternity and Trust strategies.

As a key member of the senior midwifery team you will be a highly visible member of the clinical multi-disciplinary maternity team and will be 30% clinical and 70% non-clinical management duties. You will be an advocate for high quality patient experience and choice, and demonstrate excellence in clinical practice. The Matron will be a team player who treats all colleagues with equal respect, is inclusive and democratic, and is prepared to manage staff to ensure delivery of a cost effective, efficient and equitable service.

You will be a dynamic, motivational, innovative, visible and active lead, representative of a modern maternity service. As a key member of the clinical leadership team, you will be responsible for challenging the status quo and advancing change in a number of main areas of impact, namely; promoting midwifery led care for low risk women and for women with complex needs optimal birth experiences and outcomes leading to improvements in quality and patient experience for all women.


Main duties of the job

The Matron for Labour Ward, Birth Centre, Emergency Obstetric Unit & Triage maternity services has specific areas of responsibility:

* Management of Labour Ward, Birth Centre, Emergency Obstetric Unit and Triage
* Line management of Band 7s working on Labour Ward, Birth Centre and Emergency Obstetric Unit
* Line management of Bereavement Band 7 midwives

This includes clinical responsibility, operational, leadership, governance, patient experience, strategy, QI.

Person Specification


Education / Qualifications (Essential)

* Registered Midwife Mentorship Qualification or equivalent e.g. ENB997
* Degree in Healthcare or management or commitment and demonstrable ability to work at masters level
* Evidence of continuous professional development


Skills / Abilities (Essential)

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills across the organisation and with a wide range of staff with differing levels of responsibility and different professional backgrounds
* Highly developed interpersonal skills with meticulous attention to detail.
* Ability to work pro-actively and co-operatively with senior management and clinical staff at times of stress
* Ability to command respect of the multi-disciplinary team
* Sound knowledge and ability to implement Trust safeguarding/child protection policies and procedures
* High level of a range of IT skills e.g. MS office packages


Experience (Essential)

* Current experience of clinical midwifery practice
* Experience of working in partnership with multi- disciplinary team
* Demonstrable experience of managing change within a clinical environment.
* Knowledge of current developments in midwifery and political awareness of NHS
* Up to date knowledge on safeguarding issues and statutory framework that apply
* Experience of managing a clinical team including human resources management.
* Budget management experience, including reducing costs, monitoring and determining corrective action


Knowledge (Essential)

* Knowledge/understanding of confidentiality issues
