UK Electrical Design Engineer
Reporting To
UK Contracts Manager
Purpose
The company has an immediate vacancy for an Electrical Design Engineer to join our design and delivery team, focusing on the specification, design, assembly, installation and commissioning of electrical equipment on our projects.
Suitability
The role would suit a flexible, enthusiastic and organized individual with a strong work ethic, inquisitive mind and water industry background. They will need to be self-motivated, a good communicator and willing to work in a small business environment.
Location
Based at our branch office in Alton, Hampshire (postcode GU34 2RQ) with hybrid working offered by agreement. There is likely to be a requirement to travel within the UK and Ireland to support our projects.
Duties & Responsibilities
* Oversight of electrical, instrumentation, control and automation installation work by the company, subcontractors and suppliers.
* Review electrical design drawings, schedules and documents received from clients for pricing purposes.
* Prepare electrical design drawings, calculations, schedules and documents for Motor Control Centers and cable networks to local motors and instrumentation including containment requirements.
* Prepare Functions Design Specifications (FDS) and Control Philosophies.
* Review client DNO supply characteristics, site earthing design and assess site lightning protection requirements.
* Prepare electrical design, specification and enquiry packages for inclusion in electrical subcontract enquiries.
* Review electrical design drawings, schedules and documents received from suppliers and subcontractors for approval and to ensure compliance with client specifications.
* Adhere to required standards, policies and statutory regulations for Health & Safety.
* Attend equipment Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and iFATs as required.
* Inspect systems to ensure they are installed, tested and commissioned to relevant British, ISO and client standards.
* Inspect electrical installations, co-ordinate electrical certification processes and support the commissioning process.
* Work collaboratively with colleagues, customers, suppliers and other contractors.
* Comply with all relevant Risk Assessments, Method Statements, Safe Systems of Work Plans, and work safely at all times.
* Identify and promote new ideas and improvements to the business via the appropriate reporting mechanisms.
* Attend team meetings, in person or remotely.
* Support the operation of the branch office, especially when other workers are away or on leave.
* Other duties as may arise that are consistent with the job-holder’s knowledge and skills, and needed to perform the role in line with company policies.
Key Skills & Experience
* Engineering, science or similar degree, HND, HNC or equivalent.
* Minimum three years’ postgraduate experience in a similar role within the utilities sector and/or M&E engineering environment.
* Experience in industrial/commercial electrical and ICA design, assembly, installation, testing and commissioning, ideally in the water sector.
* Experience with Motor Control Centre (MCC) / Electrical Panel design and related calculations and documentation.
* Experience with Low Voltage (LV) and Extra Low Voltage (ELV) systems, including conditioning, conversion and interpretation, plus digital I/O, relay control logic and instrumentation.
* Experience as an NIC-EIC Competent Person is advantageous.
* Good communication skills, able to interact effectively with clients and colleagues.
* Experience within the UK water industry is a distinct advantage.
* Willingness to travel regionally and nationwide (including overnight stays) and to the Company’s Group headquarters in Ireland as required.
* Full driving licence; declare any endorsements in the application.
