Job description
In partnership, Oxford City and County Council are excited to be able to offer an opportunity to support the delivery of our brand new state of the art Youth Hub. The hub will include opportunities for young people aged between 11 and 18 (or up to 25 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and for care leavers) and include a community kitchen, music studio, climbing wall and will be a one-stop shop for accessing positive activities, advice, and guidance.
The Youth Hub won’t be open until winter, so these youth worker roles offer some really creative opportunities to deliver a programme of activities using young people’s input both before and when in place. These roles will support the engagement of young people before and after the hub is in place and will include working flexible hours outside of school hours for sessions (hours to be negotiated with the right candidate and part-time and sessional hours considered welcome).
Oxford City Council’s vision is that every child and young person can fulfil their potential and become happy, safe, successful, healthy, and active citizens. This aligns with Oxfordshire County Council’s Strategic Plan –, with the priority of creating opportunities for children and young people to reach their full potential.
Our Thriving Communities Strategy outlines a commitment to the equality, inclusion, and engagement of children and young people. These roles have been created to enable more young people to access a range of local positive activities and experiences that will support their future resilience, wellbeing, and ability to thrive.
The children and young people strand of the Thriving Communities Strategy through the Youth Ambition program targets young people who fall under the following priority groups; those not involved in employment, education or training; involved with social services, disabled, black, Asian and minority ethnic, in and leaving care, carers, young women, involved with the criminal justice system, lesbian, gay, bi-sexual or transgender, refugees and asylum seekers.
The opportunity to secure Youth Investment Funding to enable a youth hub in one of the areas of greater inequality in the city was made possible in partnership with the county's Targeted Youth Support Service.
We are looking for someone who is passionate about making a difference in the lives of disadvantaged children and young people. You should have a qualification relevant to working with children and young people and have demonstrable experience in leading and running open access provision including working with disadvantaged and vulnerable groups.
We asked a group of young people what skills, experience and character they think the ideal candidate should have, they said the ideal worker should have a friendly, fun and happy personality and previous experience of working with children and young people.
