We are seeking an experienced, highly motivated, and proactive individual to join our team of three Orthoptists. The role involves working at Hillingdon and Mount Vernon Hospitals, as well as community clinics, with an opportunity to develop an extended role in AMD clinics.
The successful candidate will work as part of a team managing a diverse workload, including orthoptic and optometry clinics, joint consultant paediatric and adult motility clinics, stroke assessments for inpatients and outpatients, and acute referrals from GPs, Neurology, Maxillo-facial, Paediatrics, Stroke Service, Endocrinology, and A&E.
An orthoptic/optometry-led fast track clinic also handles referrals from school nurses, opticians, the child development centre, and health visitors.
Our comprehensive ophthalmology service includes general and specialty clinics such as Paediatrics, Ocular-motility, Botulinum Toxin, AMD, Diabetic, Glaucoma, Medical Retinal, Oculoplastic, and Corneal, delivered by 12 Ophthalmologists.
Main duties of the job
* Provide highly specialist orthoptic services as an autonomous practitioner.
* Assess, diagnose, and manage children with complex needs and challenging behaviour.
* Assess, diagnose, and manage adult patients, often as emergency cases.
* Develop and expand paediatric and adult orthoptic services within the Trust and community.
* Develop an extended role in AMD clinics.
* Educate and train undergraduate orthoptic students, pre-registration optometrists, junior doctors, school nurses, and other health professionals.
* Deputise for the Head Orthoptist in their absence.

Job responsibilities
Orthoptic Clinical Duties
* Work as an autonomous practitioner, prioritising workload and being responsible for all aspects of your work.
* Assess and manage patients referred by various departments, including paediatrics, A&E, maxillo-facial, CDC, neurology, endocrinology, and Stroke Unit.
* Conduct detailed orthoptic assessments, including visual assessments of premature babies, infants with disabilities, and children with complex conditions.
* Responsible for instilling dilating eye drops prior to examinations, following departmental protocols.
* Use clinical judgment and protocols to manage patients, including initiating treatment, scheduling follow-ups, referrals, or discharges.
* Develop individual treatment plans based on clinical reasoning and evidence-based practices.
* Manage patients requiring surgical intervention for squint correction, discussing options with parents and collaborating with surgeons.
* Perform pre- and post-operative assessments, including assessments on the day of surgery and follow-up visits.
* Conduct urgent diagnostic tests for eye casualty patients, formulate diagnoses, and recommend further tests, requiring advanced anatomical and neurological knowledge.
