Systems Safety Engineer Unmanned Air Systems Location: Maidenhead, Berkshire
About the Role
A leading UAS developer is seeking a highly motivated Systems Safety Engineer to join their growing engineering team. Reporting to the Chief Engineer, this role places the right candidate at the forefront of unmanned air systems development in the UK.
You will oversee the development and implementation of safety processes for UAS platforms, driving the integration of safety requirements into engineering designs and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. You'll assess hazards, develop safety cases, and maintain product integrity throughout the lifecycle, working closely with cross-functional teams to promote a strong safety culture.
Candidates must be eligible to hold UK Security Clearance (minimum 5 years UK residency).
Key Responsibilities
* Evaluation of aircraft and system/sub-system design safety in support of platform certification throughout the engineering lifecycle
* Generation, review and maintenance of safety engineering documentation including Zonal Hazard Analysis, Preliminary Hazard Lists, Preliminary Hazard Analysis, and System/Sub-System Hazard Analysis
* Decomposition of safety requirements across all product levels
* Validation of supplier safety analysis and documentation
* Production of safety assessment reports including fault tree analysis
* Ensuring certification evidence supports design airworthiness requirements
* Assessing customer deviations for impact on product integrity and identifying recovery routes
* Managing and communicating residual risk through appropriate processes
* Supporting project teams with risk assessments and remedial action planning
Essential Skills & Experience
* Degree or equivalent in a relevant STEM discipline
* 3–5 years' experience in a product safety engineering role within aerospace
* Knowledge of key safety regulations and standards relating to UAS development
* Experience engaging with project engineering teams on safety considerations
Desired Skills & Experience
* Systems integration and/or systems engineering experience
* UAS and autonomous systems background
* Defence sector experience
* Engagement with aviation regulators (CAA/MAA)
* Requirements engineering, configuration and data management
* Safety, environmental, or security engineering qualifications
* Model-based systems engineering, Agile/Scrum
