Overview

School/Unit Tir na n-Og is situated on the University’s Normal Site and is part of Bangor University.

Purpose of the Job

The Supply Nursery Nurse will be working as part of a key worker team for the daily needs of children between the ages of birth to five years and to give support to other personnel within the setting.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. To operate a programme of activities suitable to the age range of children in your area in conjunction with other staff
2. To support all staff and engage in a good staff team
3. To work with parents/carers of special needs children to give full integration in the setting
4. To keep a proper record of achievement file on your key children for parents/carers
5. To liaise and support parents/carers and other family members
6. To be involved with in and out of working hours activities e.g. training, monthly staff meetings, fundraising activities etc.
7. To be flexible within working practices of the setting
8. To be prepared to help where needed including to undertake certain domestic jobs within the setting
9. To work alongside the manager and staff team to ensure that the philosophy behind the project is fulfilled
10. To record accidents in the accident book ensuring the manager has initialised the report before the parent receives it
11. To look upon the setting as a whole where your help can be most utilised
12. Constantly be aware of the needs of the children to ensure every child is collected by someone known to the setting
13. To respect the confidentiality of information received
14. To develop your role within the team especially with regard to the key worker position

Specific childcare tasks:

15. Preparation and completion of activities to suit the child’s stage of development
16. To ensure that mealtimes are a time of pleasant social sharing
17. To ensure the washing and changing of children as required
18. To provide comfort and warmth to an ill child
19. To ensure the setting is of a high quality environment in order to meet the needs of individual children from differing cultures, religious backgrounds and varying stages of development
20. To be aware of the high profile of the setting and to uphold its standards at all times
21. To actively promote and support the safeguarding of children and young people in the workplace ensuring that the settings policies and procedures are observed at all times

Other Duties and Responsibilities

22. To be prepared to undertake other duties and responsibilities as deemed necessary by the senior nursery nurse/manager.
23. The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.
24. The post holder will be expected to comply with the University’s equality policies and statements, Dignity at Work and Study Policy and the University’s Welsh Language Scheme.
25. The post holder has a general and legal duty of care in relation to health, safety and wellbeing and must take all reasonable steps to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for him/her self and for other members of staff, students and visitors affected by his/her actions or inactions. The post holder is also required to comply with all applicable health and safety policies, procedures and risk assessments.
26. The post holder must comply with relevant legal and financial policies and procedures and be aware of their responsibilities in terms of the legal requirements of their posts.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential

27. Level 2 in childcare qualification.
28. Positive approach to continuing profession development (CPD).
29. An awareness of and some understanding of the importance of health and safety and food hygiene in the workplace.

Desirable

30. Completion of safeguarding awareness course.
31. First aid certificate.
32. Child protection certificate.
33. Health and safety certificate.
34. Food hygiene certificate.

Experience/Knowledge

Essential

35. Previous experience of caring for/or working with children ages from birth to five years old in a voluntary or paid capacity
36. An understanding of the foundation phase standards
37. Knowledge of the national standards for the regulation of childcare provision
38. A commitment to the provision of high quality childcare
39. A positive approach to learning and gaining new skills through team work and training opportunities

Desirable

40. Interest in the care, learning and development of young children
41. An understanding of the foundation phase curriculum.

Skills/Abilities

42. Good organisational record and planning skills
43. Good communication skills with children, colleagues, advisors and parents/carers
44. Patience, empathy with children and adults
45. Reliable and trustworthy
46. A positive approach to inclusive practice with children and colleagues
47. Enthusiasm with working with young children

49. Flexibility, occasionally working hours may be changed e.g. parents evening
50. Able to work in small teams
51. The ability to communicate in Welsh.

52. To be prepared to undertake other duties and responsibilities as deemed necessary by the senior nursery nurse/manager
53. To be flexible and available to work at short notice.
