Mechanical Design Engineer Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
Execute mechanical design tasks for both customer-specific and development projects.
Participate in meetings with global clients, offering expert input on mechanical design matters.
Take full responsibility for the mechanical aspects of assigned projects, providing technical guidance to internal teams and external stakeholders.
Collaborate with electrical and mechanical design engineers to ensure complete coordination of all engineering disciplines.
Travel occasionally within the UK and internationally, as required by project needs.
Generate innovative ideas, develop concepts, and prepare design schemes.
Create parts lists, detailed drawings, and assembly documentation.
Ensure timely completion of engineering design work in accordance with project schedules.
Monitor and manage cost targets during design, procurement, and assembly phases.
Archive and document all materials related to each project.
Conduct machinery risk assessments and advise on mechanical health and safety considerations.
Stay up to date with UK and European safety legislation and attend relevant training as needed.
Participate in project meetings and report engineering progress to Project Managers.
Work closely with all departments to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
Support assembly teams during machine build and commissioning phases.
Assist the Sales and Applications Manager with concept drawings, design estimates, part costing, and assembly planning.
Required Skills and Experience:
Strong background in designing electro-mechanical equipment and systems.
Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred); experience with sheet metal design is a plus.
Expertise in design for manufacturing and assembly, with a focus on meeting cost objectives.
Skilled in producing 2D production drawings with appropriate use of GD&T.
Capable of performing engineering calculations and design analysis.
Understanding of electrical and mechanical system interfaces.
Confident in leading technical aspects of larger, more complex projects.
Knowledge of the Machinery Directive and UKCA/CE compliance requirements.
Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting capabilities.
Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Integrated Engineering (minimum HNC required).
510 years of experience in a design or development engineering role.
