Overview
Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust has a position available for a Consultant in Infectious Disease/Medical Microbiology to join the team based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury. This post is a permanent post with a negotiable start date. The successful candidate will work across all sites including Wycombe & Amersham Hospitals.
This post is a replacement post and the post-holder will share in the provision of a first-class clinical microbiology service to the areas covered by the laboratory, along with the other three Consultant Microbiologists: Dr Ruby Devi, Dr Karthiga Sithamparanathan and Dr Jane Democratis.
Over the next few years, we are aiming to broaden the scope of microbiology services at our Trust and are therefore particularly interested to hear from jointly trained candidates who would be interested in helping us to drive transformation and service improvements for our patients.
Responsibilities
* Provide a comprehensive infection service with direct clinical care and proactive liaison with consultants, hospital staff, microbiology colleagues, GUM physicians, lead respiratory physicians for tuberculosis management, general practitioners, antibiotic pharmacists, IPC nurses, health protection consultants and CCDCs for diagnosis, management and infection control.
* Regular departmental visits and commitments to units including Intensive Care, Haematology/Oncology, Medical/Surgical admission units, wards, and departmental commitment to IPC.
* Participation in committees and MDTs such as Antimicrobial Stewardship Group, Pathology Business meetings, Microbiology Consultants Senior Laboratory Staff meetings and IPCT meetings, and Orthopaedic/Spinal Injury/Spinal Surgery/Haematology MDTs.
* Share responsibility for departmental commitments and cover for colleagues’ absence as agreed with the department and the Trust.
* Support the OPAT team to manage patients in the community, including weekly virtual OPAT rounds; cover OPAT and attend relevant MDT meetings and daily ICU ward rounds when on duty.
* Work as part of a rota of four consultants to provide clinical support to all hospital sites and local GPs.
Qualifications and requirements
* All candidates MUST hold a FULL GMC registration with a Licence to Practice in the UK.
* Be on the specialist register or be within 6 months of CCT.
* Live within 10 miles of the principal place of work at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, or within 30 minutes travelling time when on call.
* Be comfortable working across three main Hospital sites in Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust: Stoke Mandeville, Wycombe & Amersham Hospitals.
Other role details
The post is covered by the terms and conditions of the new Consultant Contract (England 2003). The appointee will be expected to contribute to departmental teaching, service development and collaboration with Trust priorities.
Department and services
The appointee will be one of four consultants in a rota to provide clinical support across hospital sites and to local GPs. The Trust has an OPAT team led by the Consultant Microbiologists and the Antimicrobial Stewardship lead. The Infection Prevention and Control lead is provided by a locum microbiologist. The department also supports a ST3 Microbiology/Infectious Diseases trainee and MTI schemes; a Specialist Registrar is working in the department.

Clinical practice and liaison
* Provision of a comprehensive infection service with timely liaison to colleagues and partners across hospital and community teams for diagnosis, management and infection control.
* Engagement with units and departments including ICU, Haematology/Oncology, Medical/Surgical wards, and regular/adhoc visits; commitment to IPC and departmental activities.
* Participation in antimicrobial stewardship, laboratory, and IPCT meetings; involvement in MDTs with Orthopaedics, Spinal Injuries, Spinal Surgery and Haematology.
