3 months contract with a Local Authority
Job Summary:
• We are looking for a motivated Smokefree Engagement Officer to support the delivery of local and national tobacco control priorities.
• Based within Public Health and Regulatory Services, the role is central to the development and implementation of smokefree workplace strategies across the borough.
• The postholder will work with employers, staff, and partners to create healthier, smoke-free environments—contributing to long-term public health outcomes.
• This is a hybrid role, combining office-based, home-based, and site-based working arrangements, ideal for someone who can build relationships, influence behaviour change, and support community and workplace wellbeing.
Key Duties/Accountabilities (Sample):
• Develop and implement strategies to engage local businesses in smokefree initiatives
• Provide expert advice and guidance on creating and enhancing smokefree workplace policies
• Deliver staff training sessions, toolkits, and workshops related to tobacco control and cessation support
• Promote local smoking cessation services and refer individuals to appropriate support
• Work collaboratively with public health partners and stakeholders to support delivery of the local Tobacco Control Plan
• Focus on reaching priority workplaces, especially those with staff less likely to engage in health interventions
• Contribute to broader public health campaigns and tobacco harm reduction activities
• Monitor and report on outcomes, engagement levels, and progress towards tobacco control goals
Skills/Experience:
• Minimum of 12 months’ recent experience in public health or a related field (preferably with smoking cessation or tobacco control focus)
• Strong communication and engagement skills, with experience influencing behaviour change
• Ability to deliver training and presentations confidently to diverse audiences
• Knowledge of tobacco control strategies and public health promotion principles
• Experience working with local businesses, employers, or community organisations
• Confident working both independently and collaboratively in a multi-agency setting
• Knowledge of workplace wellbeing initiatives or experience embedding health improvement policies
• Familiarity with regional or national smokefree frameworks and guidelines
Additional Information:
• A degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Public Health, Health Promotion, Social Sciences, Community Development).
• Location: Hybrid working – a mix of home working, office attendance (Walsall-based), and on-site business visits.
• Driving licence is required.
