Managing Director – Insurance (Property Insurance Brokerage)
We are partnered with a specialist insurance brokerage with an established client base who are seeking a Managing Director to lead and grow their insurance business. This is a statutory Board-level appointment with full executive responsibility for the leadership, performance, governance and regulatory conduct of the firm.
The successful candidate will operate as the accountable executive for the insurance brokerage, holding FCA Senior Management Function approval and carrying personal regulatory responsibility under SM&CR. The role combines strategic leadership with hands-on oversight of insurance operations, with particular emphasis on property insurance, insurer relationships, risk governance and regulatory compliance.
This is not an advisory position. The Managing Director will retain direct accountability for regulated insurance activities and regulatory conduct. Responsibilities cannot be delegated without FCA approval.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic & Executive Leadership
* Provide overall strategic direction and executive leadership of the insurance brokerage, setting and delivering long-term growth objectives within the specialist insurance market.
* Lead and develop the firm’s property insurance proposition, ensuring strong underwriting relationships, sustainable capacity and disciplined risk selection.
* Drive commercial performance across all insurance lines, with a particular focus on profitable property insurance growth.
Property Insurance Oversight & Risk Governance
* Maintain executive oversight of all property insurance placements, renewals and risk transfer strategies, ensuring fair value, suitability and appropriate market selection.
* Oversee governance frameworks specific to property insurance risks, including underwriting controls, aggregation exposure, insurer panel management and catastrophe risk considerations.
* Ensure robust controls across policy administration, premium collection, insurer settlements and complex property insurance claims handling.
* Monitor conduct risk, product governance and Consumer Duty compliance across all insurance products, with heightened scrutiny on property insurance distribution and value assessments.
Regulatory & Compliance Accountability
* Hold personal accountability for regulatory compliance across all regulated insurance activities, including regulatory reporting, complaints handling, financial crime controls and operational resilience.
* Act as the primary point of contact with the FCA on all insurance regulatory matters.
* Ensure the firm’s insurance governance framework meets FCA expectations, particularly in relation to property insurance product oversight, client suitability and conduct risk.
* Maintain ongoing fitness and propriety standards as an FCA-approved Senior Manager.
Market & Insurer Leadership
* Lead senior relationships with insurers, MGAs and capacity providers across the insurance market, with particular focus on property insurance capacity and performance oversight.
* Negotiate and oversee delegated authority arrangements and binding agreements within the insurance framework.
Operational & Financial Stewardship
* Oversee financial performance of the insurance brokerage, including revenue, profitability, capital adequacy and risk exposure.
* Ensure effective systems and controls across all insurance operations, including third-party supplier governance.
* Lead recruitment, training, competence and supervision of staff operating within regulated insurance activities.
Requirements
* Senior executive leadership experience within a UK-regulated insurance brokerage, ideally at Managing Director or equivalent level.
* Extensive experience in property insurance, including placement strategy, insurer engagement, risk assessment and claims oversight.
* Proven experience operating under SM&CR within the insurance sector, or clear readiness to hold FCA Senior Management Function approval.
* Strong understanding of FCA regulatory expectations in relation to insurance distribution, conduct risk and product governance.
* Demonstrated ability to balance strategic leadership with hands-on oversight in a specialist insurance environment.
* Experience managing financial performance, governance frameworks and business risk within an FCA-regulated insurance firm.
* Strong judgement, executive presence and eligibility to meet ongoing FCA fitness and propriety requirements.
