Job Description Summary: ROLE AND PURPOSE To support the Zoo Manager with the management of Hull Culture and Leisure’s zoo and aviary collections across the city, ensuring that all animal care and welfare is carried out to the highest possible standard in line with the latest legislation and good practice guidance. Supporting all operational activity including animal care and welfare, staff management, training, performance monitoring, health and safety and customer care. To actively promote the service to increase visitors to our collections and ensure that income is maximised. To assist the Zoo Manager with the control of resources including budgets. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: 1. To promote and safeguard the welfare of children, young people and / or vulnerable adults. 2. To assist the Zoo Manager with health and safety. This includes writing/ reviewing risk assessments and updating/ reviewing training. To ensure that risk assessments and safety inspections are regularly undertaken, control measures are in place and all necessary actions are carried out. 3. To effectively supervise staff to ensure that HCAL Animal Collections and associated facilities are operated accordance with the standard operating procedures to prevent accidents and difficult situations arising. 4. To take a lead on the day to day animal husbandry, health checks and emergency procedures. Reviewing husbandry routines and animal diets in consultation with veterinary teams and management. To liaise with veterinary teams and arrange the appropriate treatment as necessary. Including administering medication in accordance with instruction. The postholder will be expected to ensure that medicine is used safely and stored in line with company procedure at all times. To control the behaviour of visitors to create right atmosphere (friendly and welcoming) and maintain good customer relations. 5. To ensure that there is a level of security at each site and to ensure that all buildings, equipment and facilities are safe and meet the required standard, conforming to all relevant legislation. 6. To assist the Zoo Manager with the management of staff, including staff training, team meetings, communication, staff rotas and effective deployment of staff to meet the service needs. To direct the activities of Aviary Rangers and husbandry team. 7. To respond to incidents and accidents as required. To give first aid when required and liaise with emergency services. 8. Provide accurate and factual records of any accident or incident for further investigation. Ensuring that the incident investigation is completed and recorded on the appropriate recording system in a timely manner. 9. To ensure that all sites maintain high standards of cleanliness and maintenance in all areas of the facility and complete check sheets as required. 10. To ensure that animal welfare policies and procedures and husbandry tasks are carried out to the highest standard in accordance with standard operating procedures, industry best practice and relevant legislation. To ensure bio security measures are in place and followed accordingly. 11. To carryout grounds maintenance tasks as and when required to a high standard. To ensure that tasks carried out by the Aviary Ranger team are up to the required standard. 12. To produce, deliver and review documents such as collection plans, conservation plans (in-situ and ex-situ) and stock lists to ensure they are up to date. 13. To assist with the zoo license process by completing agreed tasks within the allocated timeframe. 14. To assist the Zoo Manager in managing income and performance management. Including completing and processing information gathered from customers. 15. To ensure that sites are clean and welcoming for our visitors and to ensure that routine tasks such as litter picking and graffiti removal are carried out to a high standard. 16. To ensure that faults with buildings and infrastructure are identified and dealt with in a timely fashion for minimum service delivery disruption and safety of staff and visitors. 17. To promote the service by delivering/ assisting with a range of conservation events and educational activities throughout the city. Including the delivering and development the schools package and informal education activities such as keeper for a day and animal encounter activities. 18. To attend/ undertake training and development as required. 19. To monitor and feedback on work carried out by contractors to ensure that high standards are met and the company receives value for money. 20. To complete animal records and ensure that statutory paperwork such as animal movement documentation is completed. 21. To deputise for the Zoo Manager as required, to cover leave and other absences. 22. There may be a requirement to change the shift / working pattern of the post to meet the needs of the service and match customer demands at short notice; therefore, there is a requirement for flexibility. 23. You may be required to undertake duties associated with a lower graded position in order to ensure continuity and consistency of the service provided which is outside the scope of your normal duties, providing adequate training has been given. 24.
