University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer an externally funded (Roche) two-year opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic Pharmacy Technician to join our Medicines Management team. The Specialist MS Pharmacy Technician will support the delivery, monitoring, and optimisation of disease‑modifying therapies (DMTs) for patients with Multiple Sclerosis across UHS, strengthening the Trust’s capacity to deliver safe, timely, and equitable access to an expanding range of MS treatments.
Job Summary
The postholder will contribute to the development of standardised clinical pathways, provide expert support to patients and clinical teams, and embed best practice through local SOPs and training resources. This role forms part of a two‑year pilot to evaluate the benefits of a pharmacy‑led model of DMT management.
Responsibilities
* Provide medicines management service to the MS service.
* Support prescribing, supply, and monitoring processes for MS DMTs supplied by Homecare.
* Act as a point of contact for patients and carers regarding DMT queries and treatment pathways, including those received via My Medical Record and the MS team email inbox. Provide specialist advice, education, and counselling.
* Support service improvement by conducting audits, evaluation, and development, and actively identify areas for improvement.
Person Specification
Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience
Essential Criteria
* NVQ3, BTEC in pharmaceutical science or equivalent; Technician registered with GPhC.
* Accreditation in Medicines Management or Accuracies Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT).
* Accreditation or evidence of training in patient counselling.
* Full‑time post (37.5 hours per week).
* Commitment to weekend work 1 in 6 and late‑night work one day per week on alternate weeks.
* Experience of staff management/operational workload and workforce supervision.
* Recruitment and selection experience.
* Competent in accurate supply of medicines (hospital or community pharmacy).
* Evidence of commitment to relevant ongoing CPD and personal and professional development.
* Ability to handle and resolve customer/patient complaints.
Desirable Criteria
* Experience of leading a team.
* Additional specialist pharmacy qualifications (e.g. Completed APTUK Foundation, recognized accuracy‑checking qualification, medicines management, TAQA assessor, or equivalent).
* Awareness of current professional regulations/issues.
* Experience with JAC or similar computer stock‑control system.
* Experience of service development, design, and implementation of audits.
* Experience relevant to the role (e.g. logistics, ward‑based medicines management service, clinical trials/research, aseptic services).
* Experience mentoring/coaching/motivating others.
* Experience of ESR and e‑rostering systems.
