Job Specification:
Mechanical Engineer - Water Industry (Construction, Installation & Refurbishment)
Location
Office Ilkeston - Site-based, with travel to water and wastewater treatment sites, pumping stations, and associated infrastructure projects. Occasional overnight stays will be required.
Purpose of the Role
To install, maintain, repair, and refurbish mechanical plant and equipment within the water and wastewater industry. The Mechanical Engineer / Fitter will ensure works are carried out safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards, in compliance with WIMES (Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specifications), client specifications, and health and safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
* Install, align, and commission mechanical plant and equipment, including pumps, pipework, valves, actuators, and associated systems.
* Carry out pipework installation in a range of materials and sizes, including:
o Ductile Iron, Stainless Steel, Carbon Steel, UPVC, and ABS.
o Diameters from 25mm to 1200mm.
* Undertake pipe fitting, fabrication, and assembly in accordance with drawings and specifications.
* Perform planned maintenance, breakdown repairs, and refurbishment of mechanical assets.
* Conduct mechanical fault-finding, diagnostics, and corrective actions.
* Read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and method statements.
* Ensure compliance with all Health, Safety, and Environmental requirements, including safe use of lifting/handling equipment.
* Complete job records, maintenance reports, and compliance documentation.
* Liaise with supervisors, engineers, and client representatives to support project delivery.
* Contribute to quality control and handover documentation.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
* Recognised Mechanical Apprenticeship, NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent qualification.
* Proven experience in mechanical installation, maintenance, and refurbishment within the water industry or heavy industrial sector.
* Demonstrable competence in pipework installation across ductile iron, stainless steel, carbon steel, UPVC, and ABS materials up to 1200mm diameter.
* Knowledge of pumps, valves, rotating equipment, and mechanical systems.
* Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
* Competence in using hand tools, power tools, and pipework installation/fitting equipment.
* Full UK driving licence.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
* EUSR Water Hygiene card.
* Confined space training.
* SSSTS or equivalent site supervisory training.
* Experience with welding, hot works, and advanced pipefitting techniques.
* Knowledge of condition monitoring techniques (e.g., vibration analysis, laser alignment).
* Familiarity with client-specific specifications and WIMES compliance.
Working Requirements
