Why This Role Exists
* Finance is evolving
* For nearly three decades, the function was stable, loyal and heavily transactional. It worked until the scale of the business demanded something more structured, more controlled, more future-proof.
* There's now a new Group Financial Controller in place. The shape of Finance is changing. But there's a gap
* This role is a 12-month fixed term contract designed as a stopgap backfill with real impact attached
* Initially, you'll steady the ship then, you'll help redesign it
The First Chapter
* You'll step into a gap within Management Accounts and Financial Accounting.
* Support month-end close
* Oversee core financial reporting
* Provide balance sheet oversight
* Keep things controlled and accurate while the team reshapes
* This isn't firefighting chaos. But it does need someone calm, technically strong and able to hold the line
The Second Chapter: Proper Financial Accounting
* Once a permanent hire is made into the BAU gap, your focus shifts.
* You'll help move the business from "it's worked so far" to "it's built for the next decade."
* Bringing Statutory Accounts In-House
* Currently reliant on external advisors the plan is to build capability internally, you'll support that transition
* Implementing new lease accounting under IFRS 102
* Building Real Balance Sheet Reconciliation Discipline
* Some processes are light, some are informal, some don't exist. You'll design and embed proper reconciliation frameworks
* Writing Financial Accounting Policies
* Not theoretical documents that sit in a folder
* Resetting Core Accounting Policies
* Stock, margin and core revenue recognition mechanics ensuring consistency, clarity and defensibility
* ERP Process & capability definition
* There's a new ERP on the horizon
The Environment
* Lean, commercial and sensible
* There's backing for change
But no appetite for corporate theatre
* If you need a transformation office, five consultants and a change communications pack, this won't suit you.
* If you like quietly improving foundations so the building stands stronger, you'll thrive
What They're Looking For
* A qualified accountant (ACA / ACCA or equivalent)
* Is technically strong in UK GAAP
* Has hands-on financial accounting experience
* Can build processes from scratch
* Has written (and implemented) accounting policies
* Understands retail, stock, margin and commercial nuance (ideal, not essential)
* Is comfortable moving between BAU and project work
