Job description

Salary: £40,777 - £45,091 a yearLocation: The Council House/Hybrid Working Hours: 37 hours a week Closing Date: 29 June 2026 Contract Type: Permanent An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Derby City Council’s Adult Social Care (ASC) Commissioning team. As our new Senior Commissioning Officer, you will work closely with colleagues across ASC and in close partnership with the NHS, VCFSE (Voluntary, Community, Faith, and Social Enterprise) Sector, and other organisations supporting some of the most vulnerable people living in Derby, including those with learning disabilities, autistic people, people with mental health conditions, people living with dementias, and unpaid carers. Responsibilities will include commissioning universal and specialist adult services as well as developing and delivering on our strategic approach to making improvements in the services and support available to people. Take Mo, a bright, witty and energetic 24-year-old man. He is autistic, has a learning disability and epilepsy. Mo has been in hospital for six years because he finds it difficult to live safely and happily in the community, but he is lonely in hospital and cannot do all the things he would like to because of the restrictions on him, which is having a negative impact on his mental health. Then there is Alfred, a retired police officer, who is living with Alzheimer’s. Alfred is cared for at home by his wife Gloria who brought up their 3 children and was a dinner lady at the local primary school. Despite having worked hard and saved all their lives, life is tough for them, they struggle to navigate the health and social care system and get the support they need and have money worries affecting their wellbeing. This puts them under a lot of pressure, and they both feel guilty about being a burden and not doing enough for each other. We are looking for someone to join our dynamic and friendly Adults Commissioning team who will bring outstanding communication, relationship building and critical thinking skills to help the likes of Mo find his place in the community and make sure that residents such as Alfred and Gloria get the support they need to live the better, more comfortable life they deserve after a life of service to others. The Council’s People Services directorate is responsible for the delivery of adult social care, public health, children and young people and safeguarding services. We aim to improve the health and wellbeing of the local population and care and support of those who need it, and make sure that services are of a high quality, person-led and targeted to those in most need. We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team. The role will be based primarily in Derby City Council House with flexibility for home working. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact Andrew Muirhead, 01332 643085 or for an informal discussion and more details. Who We Are Here at Derby City Council, we’re dedicated to delivering nearly 250 first-class services to citizens and businesses in the heart of the Midlands. People are at the centre of all that we do, and we have an outstanding track record of recruiting and developing talented individuals by providing them with varied and fulfilling career opportunities.
