Acute medicine in Wrexham is changing. We currently have five substantive acute physicians and two long term locums, with subspecialty interests in Respiratory Medicine, Nephrology and Clinical Pharmacology. The acute medicine team is responsible for the medical intake 8am - 5pm throughout the week, with support from the GIM rota in the evenings and at the weekends. There is a focus on ambulatory care with two ANPs and clinical hub nurse in place to support. There are plans in place to expand the ANP team.
The AMU opened in November 2019. It incorporates:
Ambulatory Emergency Care with a seating area, triage room and three dedicated clinic rooms. Trolley Bay consisting of 8 fully partitioned trolley spaces and 3 side rooms.
Frailty Unit with 12 beds run by our COTE colleagues.
Short Stay Ward with 27 beds with a 72 hour length of stay. MDT room for board rounds and clinical meetings.
Main duties of the job
1. Take a lead for development of ambulatory care, specialty in-reach or other service developments
2. Provide a consultant service for outpatients and inpatients at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.
3. Take part in the Acute Medical out of hours
4. Participate in departmental meetings, audit and clinical governance activity (including appraisal and revalidation).
5. To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team and in close liaison with consultant colleagues in Directorates of
6. Develop strong working links with primary care in an effort to reduce unnecessary admissions
7. Perform a prominent role in undergraduate education in particular clinical history taking and clinical examination. Medical students will be attached to the clinical team on-call during each 24 hour
