University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is seeking a General Practitioner with Extended Scope in Rheumatology to join its progressive, friendly team at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. UHBW delivers secondary and tertiary rheumatology services across the South West and is home to a state-of-the-art department featuring outpatient clinics, day-case facilities, DXA and ultrasound, therapy areas, and a dedicated research unit.
The multidisciplinary team includes consultants, registrars, specialist nurses, pharmacists, therapists, and technicians. The department runs specialist clinics in EIA, CTDVAS, osteoporosis, rare bone disease, and ultrasound, alongside joint clinics with paediatrics, dermatology, orthopaedics, and more. It is a regional centre for rare bone disease and vasculitis, and has won multiple BSR Best Practice Awards.
This new role offers the opportunity to develop a specialist interest in rheumatology, strengthen links with primary care, and support GP and patient education across the region. As a major teaching and research centre with strong university ties, UHBW offers excellent opportunities for academic involvement and career development.
The post-holder will work closely with the Rheumatology multidisciplinary team (MDT) at UHBW to deliver outpatient clinical services and develop a specialist interest in rheumatology. They will liaise with primary care clinicians to support shared patient care and collaborate with other medical specialties within the division. Under consultant supervision, the GP will independently manage patients in rheumatology clinics across the Trust, addressing comorbidities often overlooked in primary care. A key aspect of the role involves establishing formal links with primary care to deliver educational sessions and disseminate clinical knowledge. The GP will formulate management plans with patients, communicate diagnostic and treatment information to GPs, and engage patients—especially hard-to-reach groups—through educational initiatives. Additional responsibilities include referring patients to appropriate services, signposting resources, and supporting the Patient Advisory Group in its core functions.
