MultipleSclerosis Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)

Department: Neurology – Specialty medicine

Band: 7 pro rata if part-time

Hours: 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

You will be a key member of the Neurology multidisciplinary team, providing expert assessment, treatment, and ongoing support to people living with Multiple Sclerosis, ensuring delivery of high‑quality, patient‑centred care across the MS pathway.

You will support patients on the MS pathway, from GP referral through to treatment, follow‑up, support and discharge through personalised care planning. You will be part of the MDT team, attending local and central MDT meetings, and may be required to present cases for review supporting the MS Consultant. You will work with other professionals across all care settings of the pathway, building good relationships with the Neurology Service Team, clinicians across all other specialities, nursing and administration teams. You will support patients in both outpatient and ward settings and will lead on reviewing MS patients whilst they are admitted to our wards for other conditions.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

The post holder will be a registered nurse with a qualification and experience in the field of multiple sclerosis and who is motivated and willing to adhere to the values of the service and Trust. This post would also suit a specialist nurse in another speciality. Disciplinary working at a band 7 level wishing to move speciality and willing to undertake MS training. Clinical and professional responsibilities

* Act as a point of contact and clinical expert for patients, relatives and clinician colleagues in conjunction with the full support of the Consultant Neurologists, ensuring the patient receives the highest possible standard of evidence‑based care in line with NICE guidance in relation to the prescribing of disease‑modifying therapies.
* Work independently and without direct supervision in a variety of settings, demonstrating the ability to prioritise and manage workload. Be accountable for own professional actions as the lead specialist for secondary care MS nursing services and follow agreed policies, protocols and guidelines within the MS setting.
* In conjunction with the Multiple sclerosis/Neurology team, devise evidence‑based local strategies and protocols to provide rapid assessment and management of patients presenting with MS.


Managerial responsibilities

* Take delegated responsibility for ensuring the collection and collation of activity data in agreed format, ensuring authenticity and accuracy of findings and producing reports as requested, including presenting at directorate audit meetings. Be responsible for the interpretation and reporting of the data as required by the Senior Operations Manager.
* Manage clinical risk within own caseload. Plan specialist nursing provision, including education and training.
* Manage student nursing staff and others as required, considering skills and experience for appropriate placement, developing individuals to reach their full potential.


Training and supervisory responsibilities

* Develop patient education programmes and promote health education particularly in line with NICE guidance.
* Act as a role model demonstrating professional clinical leadership.
* Act as a teaching and educational resource, providing specialist training, education and mentoring of individual staff or groups. Advise and support base ward nursing teams in the care of MS patients ensuring appropriate treatment and nursing care is provided.


Service development responsibilities

* Lead and advise on clinical service developments, policy and guidelines development and review, quality improvement activities, identifying gaps in current service provision and working with the clinical lead and Neurology Matron in developing and delivering innovative services to meet users’ needs and local and national priorities.
* Participate in relevant clinical governance projects and audits within the service and maintain an auditable database for the service.
