Job Introduction
We’re looking for an exceptional Foundation Scientific Software Engineer – Workflows Infrastructure to help us make a difference to our planet. The role offers full‑time hours (37 h/wk) with flexibility for part‑time or job‑share arrangements. You will develop and maintain critical automation and orchestration pipelines that run Met Office science, harnessing our world‑class supercomputers and HPC infrastructure.
World‑Changing Work
Our expertise spans meteorology, climate prediction, technology, and science communication. You will work on Cylc and Rose, supporting international partners in New Zealand and Australia, while engaging scientists to optimise their workflows. This breadth of application delivers impact across weather forecasting, science research, and national decision‑making.
Responsibilities
* Deliver improvements in capability for colleagues and stakeholders through scientific software engineering.
* Provide proactive scientific and technical insight into solving software‑engineering tasks.
* Engage with others to understand requirements and the wider context.
* Apply good quality assurance processes and best practice standards.
* Communicate accurately and concisely with colleagues and stakeholders.
* Develop your own skills and support others.
Technical Focus Areas
* Web‑app front‑end development.
* Database integration.
* Communication protocols (e.g., HTTP).
* Consulting on scientific software workflows.
Benefits and Compensation
Salary up to £42,724 per annum, inclusive of:
* Civil Service pension (average employer contribution 28.97 %).
* Recruitment Retention Allowance of £2,200 per annum (market supplement, paid April 2024–March 2026).
* Annual leave starting at 27.5 days (plus bank holidays) rising to 32.5 days after 5 years, with the option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year.
