Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled and proactive BAU Server Engineer to join our IT team supporting General Practice (GP) sites across the NHS estate in London. This role focuses on the day-to-day management, maintenance, and support of standalone server environments, ensuring the reliability, security, and performance of critical systems.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide business-as-usual (BAU) support for standalone server environments across NHS GP practices.
* Administer and maintain virtualized server infrastructure using VMWare ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V.
* Deploy and manage Windows Server environments, including updates, patching, and performance monitoring.
* Oversee server backup operations using Commvault, ensuring data integrity and disaster recovery readiness.
* Perform regular server maintenance, including hardware checks, updates, and incident resolution.
* Configure and manage DNS, DHCP, and Active Directory services in line with NHS IT standards.
* Support and manage server firewalls, ensuring compliance with NHS cybersecurity policies.
* Liaise with third-party hardware vendors to diagnose and resolve hardware issues effectively.
* Maintain comprehensive documentation of server configurations, incidents, and maintenance schedules.
Essential Skills & Experience:
* Proven experience in a Server Engineer or similar infrastructure support role, ideally within a healthcare or public sector environment.
* Strong knowledge of VMWare ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V in a standalone server context.
* Proficient in managing and supporting Windows Server platforms.
* Experience with server backup tools, particularly Commvault.
* Solid understanding of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and server networking concepts.
* Working knowledge of server firewalls and basic cybersecurity best practices.
* Basic hardware diagnostic skills and the ability to effectively communicate issues to vendors.
* Excellent troubleshooting skills with a logical and methodical approach.
* Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with a focus on clear documentation.
Desirable:
* Experience working within NHS IT systems or public health sector IT environments.
* Knowledge of NHS data protection policies and standards.
* Relevant certifications (e.g., MCSA/MCSE, VMWare Certified Professional).
Working Conditions:
* Primarily based in London with travel to local GP practices as required.
* Occasional out-of-hours work may be necessary for scheduled maintenance or urgent incident response.
