About the Role

The University of Reading’s Meteorology Department is seeking an enthusiastic individual to develop and embed the use of sub-seasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) climate forecasts in decision-making. Using outputs from a new state-of-the-art hybrid machine-learning forecast system, the Associate will develop tools, methods, and understanding of how S2S information can be used to provide actionable market intelligence, integrating this knowledge into daily business operations at British Gas, a leading UK energy supplier. The role offers a generous training budget and support, positioning the successful candidate as a leader in applying S2S forecasting within the energy sector.


Context and Importance

Weather significantly impacts energy systems. The energy sector’s transformation, including electrification and renewable reliance, heightens the need for high-quality forecasts to mitigate weather-related risks. This project aims to embed state-of-the-art forecast information into daily business decisions, managing risk for millions of customers. It is a professional role with opportunities to publish and disseminate findings internally and externally.


Candidate Requirements

* Strong commitment and ability to conduct applied research in an industrial setting
* Scientific analytical and research skills relevant to mathematical and physical sciences
* Proficiency in scientific computing and programming
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Knowledge of climate science and weather prediction methods
* A PhD is not mandatory but may be advantageous
