About the Role
My client is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Project Manager to lead the delivery of a portfolio of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across the Southern African region. Working remotely between our regional project sites and our head office in Newark, UK, this senior leadership role offers the opportunity to deliver cutting-edge energy storage infrastructure supporting the transition to renewable power across the continent.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the full project lifecycle across multiple BESS installations (20+ projects, each with utility-scale capacity) — ensuring they are delivered on time, on budget, safely, and to the highest technical and quality standards.
You will oversee the performance and coordination of subcontractors, suppliers, and installation teams, while ensuring that free-issue components (such as battery containers, inverters, transformers, cabling, and control systems) are integrated seamlessly into project delivery. This position is ideal for an experienced project manager looking to play a pivotal role in scaling clean energy infrastructure across Southern Africa.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the successful delivery of multiple utility-scale BESS projects across Southern Africa, each involving complex design, construction, and commissioning phases.
* Manage and coordinate subcontractors, suppliers, and installation partners to ensure all works are executed to Scope 12 standards and in accordance with project specifications.
* Oversee all stages of project execution, including planning, procurement, logistics, installation, commissioning, and handover.
* Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, safely, and in line with all regulatory, technical, and quality standards.
* Manage the integration and installation of free-issue components such as battery systems, power conversion units, switchgear, transformers, cabling, and control systems.
* Develop and maintain comprehensive project schedules, budgets, risk registers, and performance reports.
* Monitor site activities, ensuring compliance with HSE policies, contractual obligations, and Scope 12 requirements.
* Act as the primary point of contact for clients, authorities, partners, and internal stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
* Provide regular reporting and strategic updates to the Managing Director.
* Drive continuous improvement and innovation in project delivery and contractor performance.
About You
Requirements:
* Proven experience delivering large-scale energy infrastructure projects, ideally in battery storage, renewable energy, or power systems.
* Strong background in managing contractors, suppliers, and complex project portfolios across multiple locations.
* Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
* Strong understanding of Scope 12 installation requirements and BESS deployment best practices.
* Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver results under tight timelines.
* Experience working in Africa or remote regions is highly desirable.
* Willingness to travel internationally and spend time on project sites as required.
