Main duties of the job
1. Be responsive to the service needs as they arise and constantly seek to improve the productivity and quality of the service.
Ensure personal conduct is of the highest standard at all times while on the hospital premises, exhibiting courtesy and efficiency to patients, visitors and users of the service at all times.
Duties will include driving the Trusts Electrical Tug. When required, you may need to assist with the emergency and evacuation procedures.
In this dynamic working environment there will be a need to deal with dynamic changes and unpredictable situations that require immediate attention, patience and a sense of humour.
Assume personal responsibility for training & personal and professional development to ensure adherence at all times with departmental operational currencies, procedures and Trust policies and standards, inclusive of signing as having read and understood all Policy & Standing Operational Procedures (SOPs), andadhered to at all times.
To ensure effective staff engagement and communication.
Responsible for maintaining and actively enhancing performance standards, supporting Key Performance Indicator
To proactively maintain team cohesion in order to continuously enhance the capability within the Waste Management Team and the Facilities Department as a whole. To act as a positive role model to peers.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Please note: This role does not meet the minimum criteria for visa sponsorship under the current UK immigration rules, which set specific salary and skill thresholds. As such, we are unable to provide sponsorship for this post. Applicants will therefore need to already have the right to work in the UK to be considered. We include this information at the outset to provide clarity and avoid unnecessary inconvenience for applicants.
If you are applying using a Graduate visa as your right to work, you must have a minimum of 18 months remaining on your visa at time of application.
2. Driving the Trusts Electrical Waste Tug & Trailer in a safe and appropriate manner.
3. Using the Trusts Domestic Waste Compactor.
4. Using the Trusts Cardboard Bailer.
5. Litter Picking.
6. Snow clearing duties.
7. Emptying the external waste bins.
8. Cleaning all external hospital signs.
9. Removal of broken/old furniture & equipment.
10. Labelling all clinical waste using the correct waste stream labels.
11. Ensure correct and appropriate use of radio, FSI (digital text messaging system) and other communication equipment at all times in compliance with the local guidelines and procedures
12. Liaise and communicate with the Helpdesk dispatcher maintaining professionalism at all times
13. If driving duties are required these must be in accordance with on-site restrictions, speed and statutory regulations.
14. Ensure the vehicle is roadworthy and safe before, during and after use, and complete relevant documentation within the prescribed frequencies.
15. Ensure vehicles are kept clean and tidy and are cleaned inside and out.
16. Report any vehicle defects or concerns immediately to Assistant Duty Manager/Duty Manager.
17. In the event of any fire/major accident or incident, man key entrances, check ID badges, assist patients able to walk and assist nursing team with patients unable to walk.
18. Collection and safe removal and, where appropriate, the recording of non-clinical and clinical waste within your area of work, in line with Trust policies and procedures.
19. Assist the Trust in running an effective waste recycling and waste minimisation system, including shredding when required.
20. To have a flexible approach to working with new innovations and technologies to aid and enhance service delivery.
21. Ensure the cleanliness of the Porters lodge at all times.
22. Ensure the cleanliness of the waste areas at all times.
23. Maintain a clean, neat and tidy appearance, complying with Trust uniform and hand care guidelines and high standards of personal hygiene.
24. Be dressed in the correct uniform at all times including the wearing of name badges and Trust identity cards and to ensure that both are clearly visible at all times
25. Report immediately to the Assistant Duty/Duty Manager and/or other appropriate person any faults or defects to Trust equipment or premises, especially those which could be dangerous.
26. Report any accidents or near misses to the appropriate manager and complete the appropriate incident/accident report forms.
27. Use all mechanical and electrical equipment in a correct and safe manner, using appropriate methods of work, following training.
28. Ensure confidentiality, privacy and dignity is maintained at all timesin accordance with the Data Protection Act and in line and Trust policy, where appropriate.
29. Ensure you understand and comply with all relevant current legislation as set out in Trust policies and procedures and the related documentation, including contract of employment, training recordsand security procedures.
30. Conduct yourself in a professional manner whilst on Trust premises or public highways
31. Participate as required, in regular team meetings / working, performance reviews, job chats, return to work discussions and co-operate with accident and other investigations
32. Engage in the process to identify your own personal development and training needs and attending agreed training programmes
33. Record Portering activity on to Trust paperbased systems as and when required.
34. All portering staff will be mindful to give assistance and wherever possible to help with any queries raised by patients, visitors and staff
35. Any other duties as may be reasonably requested within the grade of the post
36. Ensure all clinical waste is removed from areas on a daily basis ensuring all bins are tagged correctly
37. Use the time recording (clocking in and out) system.
38. To work in a self-motivated and professional manner at all times and set a positive working example to other Staff and the Trust.
39. Assistnew start inductions on the “buddy” programme.
40. Receive and provide general basic level communications in a timely and accurate manner.
41. Communicate with patients and other staff throughout the shift.

Essential criteria
42. Understanding of written and verbal English language
