We're on a journey to build a workforce reflective of our Borough.

We are committed to fostering diverse teams where everybody can bring their authentic selves to work and feel that they belong. If you want to work for a Council where everybody is encouraged to meet their full potential and make a difference in our neighbourhoods, we would love to hear from you!

Your role:

The Child Exploitation Worker supports young people at risk of or experiencing exploitation, working directly with them and their families to provide tailored interventions. The role involves attending multi-agency meetings, contributing to safeguarding plans, and maintaining accurate, timely records. Strong communication, time management, and organisational skills are essential. The worker must build trusting relationships, advocate for the child’s voice, and collaborate with professionals across education, health, police, youth justice, substance misuse services and social care. A trauma-informed approach and understanding of exploitation dynamics are vital. Flexibility, empathy, and resilience are key to supporting positive outcomes for vulnerable young people and their families.

About you:

You are a compassionate and resilient professional with a strong background in working with vulnerable young people, particularly those at risk of or experiencing exploitation. You excel at building trust and forming meaningful relationships, using a trauma-informed and empathetic approach to support young people and their families through complex challenges.

You’re persistent and creative in your engagement, never giving up on a young person and always advocating for their voice to be heard. You’re confident working collaboratively with families and professionals across education, health, police, youth justice, support services and social care, contributing effectively to multi-agency safeguarding plans.

You understand that effective support also relies on strong written work, you can write in a clear, professional and detailed manner. You will be expected to complete chronologies and assessments in this role, however training and support will be provided. You can maintain accurate, timely, and reflective records that contribute to safeguarding and planning. Your time management and organisational skills ensure you can balance direct work with young people alongside essential documentation.

A team player with a flexible and proactive attitude, you bring energy, insight, and reliability to your work. A full driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential, as you’ll often be working in the community.

About us:

Wigan Council has been voted ‘Overall Council of the Year’ at the APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) Awards. We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or 'unbroken' between the supporting organisations.

The Progress with Unity plan is a place movement for change for the next decade, bringing a new era for Wigan Borough. It draws on the strengths of our individual organisations, recognising that together we can achieve much more for our communities by delivering on our 2 place missions; create fair opportunities for all children, families, residents and businesses and make our towns and neighbourhoods flourish for those who live and work in them.

The Complex Safeguarding Team (CST) is a dynamic, multi-agency team based at Wigan Police Station. We work with young people who are at risk of child sexual exploitation, child criminal exploitation, gang involvement, and serious youth violence. Our approach is rooted in trauma-informed practice, with a strong emphasis on building trusted, consistent relationships with young people while also working to disrupt perpetrators.

We are a strong, supportive team with a shared passion for making a difference. Team stability is one of our strengths, there is very little turnover, which reflects the positive and collaborative culture we’ve built. This is a great opportunity to join a well-established team that values each member’s contribution.

We are committed to continuous learning and professional development, and we actively support a healthy work-life balance. While we value being based together to encourage joint working and visibility, we also offer opportunities to work from home.

Here at Wigan, we are proud to support flexible working patterns, when the service can accommodate this. We also take a blended approach to where we work, depending on the work we do. This may include working from home, the office, or the community. We like to thank our employees for their hard work and commitment by giving them the opportunity to access a range of exclusive rewards and benefits click here to find out more about working for #TeamWigan.
