Band 6 Senior Medicines Value Pharmacy Technician
Role Overview
We are seeking a GPhC‑registered Pharmacy Technician with strong organisational, problem‑solving and communication skills to lead the medicines value programme at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. The role focuses on high‑cost drugs, biosimilars and cost‑effective prescribing, supporting the Trust’s commitment to optimal patient care and value for money.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide technical expertise to medicines optimisation and switch projects.
* Monitor adherence to pathways, protocols and formulary choices.
* Maintain accurate switch tracking systems and ensure robust data reporting.
* Act as the first point of contact for the biosimilar patient helpline.
* Work with prescribers and pharmacy teams to resolve medicines supply or usage issues.
* Contribute to audits, assurance returns and governance reports.
* Support the development of operational policies to improve efficiency and safety.
* Manage day‑to‑day operations of the medicines value service, including patient support helplines, data systems and audit activities.
* Identify opportunities for cost‑effectiveness and quality improvement in medicines use.
* Line‑manage and develop a Band 5 Pharmacy Technician.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential Criteria
* Professional registration as a Pharmacy Technician through the General Pharmaceutical Council.
* NVQ Level 3, BTEC or recognised equivalent qualification.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Significant post‑registration experience in medicines management or optimisation roles.
* Experience leading or supporting medicines savings or switch programmes (e.g., biosimilars).
* Experience supervising or line‑managing direct reports, including appraisals.
* Experience implementing new services and procedures.
* Experience working with external staff and organisations.
* Ability to handle non‑routine/complex issues and apply judgement.
* Experience in audit, KPI monitoring, performance reporting and governance processes.
Desirable Criteria
* Leadership or management experience.
* Experience using the JAC Pharmacy computer system.
* Experience developing pharmacy services or home‑care services.
* Experience in policy development or implementation.
* Patient‑facing experience, including helplines or counselling.
Compensation and Benefits
* Salary: £38,682 – £46,580 per annum (Yearly).
* Contract: Permanent, full time (37.5 hours week).
