Senior Legal Counsel – Regulatory positioned in the Legal department, reporting to the Head of Legal UK Corporate Affairs & Governance with an information and cooperation line to the Head of Legal, Clearing UK.
Your job
The Senior Legal Counsel will advise UK businesses—transactional banking, clearing, markets, financing solutions and coverage—as well as support functions (technology & operations, finance, risk, HR, compliance) on a wide range of regulatory issues. The role supports the Head of Legal in identifying, monitoring and mitigating legal risks, while proactively providing legal advice to help the business realise its plans and manage legal and reputational risk.
Key Results and Core Activities
Guidance and specialised legal advice
* Follows future developments influencing the bank and the financial industry; analyses legal risks and commercial interests, proposing solution‑driven approaches.
* Gives straightforward, independent legal advice in transactions and projects and assists with implementation.
* Handles incidents, claims and litigation, ensuring strong client relationships and high‑quality advice.
* Escalates issues to the UK Head of Legal or to business management (as appropriate).
Network and lobby
* Actively builds and expands contacts inside and outside the bank to influence decisions and maintain trusted relationships.
* Participates in lobbying, consultations on new laws and regulations, and professional dialogues with internal and external stakeholders.
Training and knowledge
* Delivers internal presentations and training on specific legal topics to raise risk awareness and knowledge.
* Acts as the point of contact for the field of specialism.
Project/File/Transaction Management
* Deals with complex legal issues in large, high‑profile projects/transactions with cross‑border dimensions.
* Maintains contact with parties and seeks guidance when necessary.
* Manages client expectations and provides after‑sales / feedback.
Management of external lawyers
* Engages external lawyers/law firms for incidents, claims, litigation and specific legal questions.
* Manages strategy, arguments and works closely on content.
Advice and coordination in projects
* Coordinates multidisciplinary project teams within business lines, across the organization or internationally.
* Manages deadlines, informs team leaders or next‑level management of progress, next steps, issues and impact.
Policies, guidelines and standards
* Drafts policies, guidelines and standards to prevent legal risk.
* Translates laws and regulations into business requirements, policies and procedures.
Your profile
* Common law qualified lawyer.
* Experience at a major national or internationally recognised law firm; in‑house legal experience with a financial institution strongly preferred.
* Strong research, writing and drafting skills; ability to prepare clear, concise documents and reports.
* Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
* Proven experience balancing legal risks with commercial needs.
* Ability to manage competing priorities effectively.
* Ability to analyse the impact of law on new products and services.
* Proactive, solution‑driven team player comfortable liaising with stakeholders of varying seniority.
* Excellent negotiation skills and ability to drive results in a collaborative environment.
* Attention to detail with strong legal research and analysis skills.
* Specialised knowledge of financial services regulatory law (UK and EU) covering FSMA, regulated activities, PRA rulebook, FCA handbook, financial crime, AML.
