About Us
MATHESON WHITELEY is an RIBA chartered architecture and design studio founded by Donald Matheson and Jason Whiteley. The practice delivers thoughtful public and private spaces for arts and culture. We have a track record helping arts organisations to connect with new audiences and communities by making better use of their existing buildings. This work is complemented by a growing portfolio of private houses. The studio’s output has been recognised for its common-sense approach to construction, continuity with the past, and sense of space.
Role
We are looking for a Senior Architect (Part 3) with minimum 5 years post-qualification experience to lead design and technical packages across RIBA Stages 2–5 on heritage and cultural projects, and to progress these on site through to completion, successful handover and post-completion.
We are a small studio and remote-first. The role would suit someone who is well organised and comfortable working independently day-to-day—planning workload, documenting decisions, managing priorities, and driving progress without close supervision—while collaborating with a focused team of architects, consultants, and clients. Strong Revit proficiency in RIBA late stages is essential. There is occasional requirement for UK travel for site visits, surveys, and meetings.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and coordinate design information (Revit/BIM Collaborate-based with Indesign); precisely maintain models, drawings, schedules design reports and specifications.
* Prepare planning and Listed Building Consent submissions; develop Design and Access and Heritage statements; liaise with conservation officers.
* Produce coordinated technical details compliant with UK Building Regulations, sustainability and accessibility best practices.
* Support pricing/tendering and administer construction contracts during delivery, keeping clear records and identifying risks early.
* Contribute to H&S/CDM 2015 design-risk reviews; attend site visits/surveys and issue concise site reports
Key Skills
* RIBA-qualified Architect with 5+ years post-Part 3; right to work in the UK.
* Ability to demonstrate experience through RIBA 1–7
* Interest in arts/cultural projects, historic buildings, reuse and traditional forms of construction
* Revit proficiency in construction; experience with scan-to-BIM workflow; BIM delivery to LOD 300
* Sound grasp of Planning/LBC processes, Building Regulations and buildability
* Experience preparing tender and construction documentation and exposure to JCT contracts
* Ability to work remotely with precision, good time management skills and clear communication
* Additional Interests
* Experience with traditional construction/conservation; listed buildings and buildings for arts and culture
* Blender and procedural materials experience, particularly in digital simulation of historic materials
* Familiarity with CMap (or similar) for resourcing/fee tracking
What We Offer
* Competitive salary; pension; hardware and software; CPD and registration support
* High degree of flexibility within a clear project framework and experienced project support
* A meaningful role in a close-knit, design-focused team
