Area Ranger - Huddersfield Summary We’re looking for an experienced countryside ranger who’s ready for a new challenge. You’ll be working at the forefront of nature conservation and land management, managing a dedicated team of rangers in a landscape that’s important for wildlife and loved by people. Interview date 15th April 2026 What it's like to work here Working on Marsden Moor means being part of a dedicated team of staff and volunteers looking after a landscape that’s both spectacular and challenging. Marsden Moor is exposed, busy, and at the forefront of the effects of and fight against climate change. The Area Ranger role leads on our response to these challenges. Managing, developing and championing Marsden’s small staff team and expert volunteer groups is a core part of the role. They bring deep local knowledge, specialist skills and an extraordinary amount of commitment, and you’ll help shape the work programmes, training and opportunities that keep them engaged and able to make a real difference on the ground. The role plays a key part in planning for and responding to moorland wildfires. You’ll help staff the rota throughout the fire season (February to October), which includes evening and weekend working and being part of the on-call rota. It’s demanding work at times, but you’ll be supported by an experienced team, local partners and a community that cares deeply about the moor. Alongside the challenges, there’s huge satisfaction in seeing the impact of your work — from restoring peatland and improving habitats to helping visitors and local communities understand how special and fragile the place is. The combination of practical conservation, team leadership, community engagement and hands on problem solving makes this a genuinely rewarding role for someone who thrives in big, inspiring landscapes and wants to make a real difference. What you'll be doing As the Area Ranger, you’ll be managing a small team of rangers working across a large moorland site. As you develop a flexible and effective programme of work for your team of staff and volunteers, you’ll be guided both by the site’s unique requirements and by the Trust’s strategy for restoring nature and enabling everyone to enjoy the countryside. Your role is crucial in meeting the Trust’s high standards of presentation and property maintenance. You’ll build strong and positive relationships with colleagues, contractors, commoners, graziers and neighbouring land managers. You’ll introduce a wide variety of people to the importance of your nature conservation work through events, guided walks and engaging the local community. You’ll lead the property team to develop meaningful engagement and volunteering opportunities to support our peatland restoration work. Please also read the full role profile attached to this advert.
