Trainee Clinical Perfusionist

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic trainee to join the Clinical Perfusion department based at St Thomas' Hospital. The successful applicant will enter our two‑year training programme, learning to deliver cardiopulmonary bypass along with other additional perfusion techniques.
During this training period, you will be required to attend Bristol University to study toward an MSc in Perfusion Science. You will also develop your clinical skills, performing 150 supervised cardiopulmonary bypass cases to undertake the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists practical exam, leading to accreditation and professional registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists.
The successful candidate may be required to undertake a portion of cross‑site training at Guy’s and St Thomas’ other two sites, Harefield Hospital and Royal Brompton Hospital.
Candidates should have a minimum 2:1 grade in a relevant science degree to enrol on the course.
Automatic promotion to AFC Band 7 will occur upon successfully completing both the MSc and the accreditation exam.
Main duties of the job
* Under direct supervision by a qualified Clinical Perfusionist, undertake a range of perfusion techniques during routine and emergency Cardiopulmonary Bypass.
* Develop skills to assess the patient's relevant medical history, pathology and diagnosis to enable appropriate decisions concerning conduct of the procedure.
* Set up, prime, and manage the Cardiopulmonary Bypass equipment to maintain life support during CPB.
* Undertake, analyse, and interpret arterial/venous blood gases and coagulation status.
* Administer drugs including colloid/crystalloid fluids, vasoactive drugs, cardioplegia solution, potassium, anticoagulants, haemostatic drugs under direct supervision of a Clinical Perfusionist.
* Manipulate the patient's cardiovascular system on a second‑to‑second basis while on CPB.
* Undertake haemofiltration and blood transfusion as required under direct supervision.
* Assist in the quality control, calibration and maintenance of complex medical equipment in clinical perfusion and ensure compliance with patient testing policies.
* Acquire an understanding and assist in the running of Intra‑Aortic Balloon Counter‑Pulsation.
* Ensure all data acquisition and other patient‑related records are complete and appropriately filed/stored in line with Guy’s & St Thomas’ Foundation Trust and professional body guidelines.
Job Responsibilities
Perform a minimum of 150 supervised CPB cases while completing the MSc Clinical Perfusion Science course and pass the College of Perfusion practical examination to become an accredited Clinical Perfusion Scientist.

Salary
£47,951 to £56,863 a year per annum inclusive of HCA.
