Welfare Officer – Good Secondary School – Brighton

Start Date: As soon as possible
Contract: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: Paid to scale

School Information:
This is an 11 to 18 well-established, Good Ofsted Rated Secondary School located in the vibrant coastal city of Brighton. The school is celebrated for its strong pastoral culture, inclusive values, and commitment to nurturing the wellbeing of every child. With a diverse student population and a long-standing focus on emotional support, safeguarding, and mental health awareness, the school has developed one of the strongest welfare frameworks in the region.

Students here are encouraged to express themselves, seek support when needed, and take pride in their learning environment. Behaviour across the school is excellent, with clear routines, consistent expectations, and a friendly, respectful atmosphere. The school campus includes modern classrooms, quiet reflection areas, a wellbeing hub, therapy rooms, and dedicated pastoral spaces.

The leadership team is deeply committed to student welfare and invests heavily in training, resources, and pastoral staffing. Staff enjoy a culture of collaboration where every department contributes to the wellbeing of its students. This supportive and proactive environment makes it an ideal workplace for a Welfare Officer seeking to make a meaningful impact.

Welfare Department:
The Welfare Department plays a central role in supporting students with emotional, social, behavioural, and mental health needs. As the Welfare Officer, you will work closely with the safeguarding team, pastoral leaders, SENCO, attendance staff, senior leaders, teachers, and external agencies to provide tailored support to individual students.

The welfare hub is a calm, comforting space designed to support students in crisis, help regulate emotions, or provide a quiet, structured environment for reflection. The team consists of counsellors, pastoral mentors, safeguarding officers, and wellbeing practitioners who work together to deliver a truly holistic provision.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
• Offering one-to-one support sessions with students experiencing emotional, behavioural, or social challenges.
• Creating personalised support plans and monitoring student progress.
• Delivering early intervention strategies to help prevent issues from escalating.
• Conducting wellbeing checks, pastoral conversations, and restorative meetings.
• Liaising with parents/carers to offer guidance and support.
• Coordinating referrals to external agencies such as CAMHS, social care, youth services, or counselling organisations.
• Maintaining detailed welfare records in accordance with safeguarding protocols.
• Supporting whole-school initiatives including wellbeing assemblies, mental health workshops, and anti-bullying programmes.
• Collaborating with tutors, Heads of Year, and pastoral leads to ensure consistent support.
• Participating in safeguarding meetings, multi-agency forums, and behaviour panels.

This role requires warmth, empathy, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to supporting young people. You will be a point of stability for students who need someone to listen, guide, and advocate for them.

Requirements:
• Experience working with young people in a welfare, safeguarding, pastoral, or mental health role.
• Excellent communication, listening, and empathy skills.
• Ability to remain calm, patient, and professional in challenging situations.
• Strong understanding of safeguarding, child protection, and early help (training provided).
• Ability to work with sensitivity and confidentiality at all times.
• Strong organisational and record-keeping skills.
• Experience working with external agencies desirable.
• A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable students and promoting inclusion.
