About The University

Swansea University is a research‑led university that has been making a difference since 1920. The university community thrives on exploration and discovery and offers the right balance of excellent teaching and research, matched by an enviable quality of life. Our stunning waterfront campuses and multicultural community make us a desirable workplace for colleagues from around the world. Our reward and benefits, and ways of working enable those who join us to have enriching careers, matched by an excellent work‑life balance.

About The Role

This innovative and exciting scheme provides an excellent career opportunity for newly qualified or established General Practitioners who want to gain knowledge and experience in medical education and research. In addition to the competitive salary, there is funding available for successful applicants to pursue higher qualifications in their field of interest and also to attend or present at conferences. From the opportunities offered by the scheme, previous Fellows have been enabled to establish a portfolio career, combining GP work with medical education, research or both.

The role provides a prime opportunity to join Swansea University Medical School, which is a Top 5 UK Medical School (Times Good University Guide 2023). The School ranks 1st in the UK for Research Environment and 2nd for Overall Research Quality (Research Excellence Framework 2014‑2021).

Responsibilities

* Be based at Swansea University Medical School for three days a week to explore teaching and research opportunities under guidance.
* Be based in a GP practice for the remaining two days (in Hywel Dda, Powys or Swansea Bay Health Boards) to deliver clinical work.
* Conduct three sessions of clinical work each week and devote one session to developing services and systems that may improve patient care for the local population.
* Part‑time Fellows will have their time allocated according to their individual requirements (e.g., 60% FTE → two days at the university and one day at the GP practice).

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

The University is committed to supporting and promoting equality and diversity in all its practices and activities. We aim to establish an inclusive environment and welcome diverse applications from the following protected characteristics: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race (including colour, nationality, ethnic and national origin), religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation. As an inclusive and welcoming workplace, we value people for their skills regardless of their background. Applications are welcome in Welsh and will not be treated less favourably than those submitted in English.

Welsh Language Skills

The Welsh language level required for this role is Level 1 – a little. The role holder will be able to pronounce Welsh words, answer the phone in Welsh (good morning/afternoon) and use very basic everyday words and phrases (thank you, please, etc.). Level 1 can be reached by completing a 1‑hour course. The University is a proud bilingual institution; our Welsh Language Strategy outlines our aspiration to promote the language and enable staff to engage with it as an additional workplace skill and a gateway to new cultural and social opportunities. Welsh speakers have the right to an interview in Welsh. Applicants for a role where Welsh skills are essential are expected to present their application in Welsh and will be interviewed in Welsh, if shortlisted.

Additional Information

Applications for this role will take the format of a CV submission and cover letter.

A satisfactory DBS certificate must be provided before a start date can be confirmed.

This is a fixed‑term post for two years; Fellows will be based for one year in different practices (i.e. two practices during the programme). Practices are appraised by the Programme Directors before and after a Fellow is placed there and potential placements will be discussed with the successful applicants before allocation.

The posts are likely to commence in January 2026, but the starting date is flexible. Applicants wishing to pursue the Fellowship scheme on a less than full time basis are encouraged to apply.
