Overview of project/role
The Senior Maintenance Support Technician is responsible for ensuring the safety of line inspections, asset monitoring, maintenance, renewal, and enhancements prioritisation, asset stewardship, and life/performance optimisation. This includes asset stewardship design, infrastructure inspection, asset data management, risk-based prioritisation, and safe delivery of reliability-centred maintenance.
The Senior Maintenance Support Technician will assist the Principal Maintenance Support Technician in maintaining the Elizabeth line railway safely, efficiently, and effectively to meet performance requirements.
The Senior Technician will support the PMST in safety-critical deployment, tactical coordination of maintenance teams, work prioritisation, and engineering stewardship.
As the Senior Maintenance Support Technician, you will support the Principal Maintenance Technician in ensuring track system safety and reliability, auditing, assurance, and asset life improvements.
Key Accountabilities:
* Assist the PMST in delivering safety of line and safety-critical asset/system inspections, compliance, work prioritisation, and tactical deployment. This includes infrastructure inspection validation and quality checks.
* Support the Track team in establishing intervention regimes and managing maintenance stewardship to meet Rail for London standards and performance, including asset replacement where redesign isn't needed.
* Operate and maintain the RfLI infrastructure monitoring vehicle (IMV), ensuring compliant inspections and data integration into the asset management system for fault management.
* Plan maintenance deployment with operations, ensuring alignment with operational and asset management requirements, including on-call duties.
* Train, mentor, and assess Maintenance Delivery staff to ensure a competent workforce.
* Ensure infrastructure and asset maintenance standards are met through adherence to policies and procedures, including safety and functionality in design and construction phases.
* Implement continuous improvement models, especially using Reliability-Based Maintenance as part of the 'Predict and Prevent' strategy.
* Ensure compliance with Track standards and operational requirements.
* Ensure quality and compliance in all track work delivery.
* Create and review Track Asset Intervention Plans and Technical Surveys and Designs.
Knowledge:
* Member or Associate of a relevant professional institution (e.g., PWI, ICE, IstuctE, IMechE / IEE / IRSE)
* Understanding of Rail Industry structures and agencies
* Application of railway safety standards and processes
* Knowledge of Network Rail Safety standards
* Knowledge of track systems, including rail, geometry, S&C, and fastenings
* Inspection techniques such as visual inspections, 053, 054, etc.
* Maintenance methods, legislation, and standards
* Knowledge of railway systems and disciplines (Civil, Track, OHLE, S&T)
* Appreciation of Risk-Based Maintenance and its application on Track assets
Skills:
* Leadership experience with ability to motivate multidisciplinary professionals
* Excellent communication, negotiation, and influencing skills, especially with external contractors
* Strong decision-making and analytical skills
* Risk management expertise
* Ability to articulate clear visions for initiatives and programs
Experience:
* Experience in rail or critical infrastructure industries
* Experience managing infrastructure stewardship and maintenance
* Experience managing maintainers and developing stewardship strategies
* Experience working with engineering functions and mentoring in track disciplines
* Substantial experience as a Track Maintenance Technician
* Track Asset Management and maintenance in railway environments
* Auditing & assurance of assets and maintenance, including use of management systems
