We are seeking a calm, patient, and dedicated Autism Teaching Assistant to join a supportive and inclusive primary school in Romford, starting as soon as possible. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting pupils with autism and helping them succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. The school has a strong inclusive ethos and experience supporting pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). The SEN team works closely with class teachers, parents, and external professionals to provide structured and personalised support. Senior leadership is approachable and highly supportive of SEN staff. As an Autism Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with pupils with autism, either on a 1:1 basis or in small groups, supporting them throughout the school day. You will help pupils access learning, develop communication skills, manage sensory needs, and build positive relationships. Key Responsibilities Provide tailored support to pupils with autism (ASC) Work 1:1 or in small groups within the classroom and specialist spaces Support communication, social interaction, and emotional regulation Implement strategies from EHCPs, behaviour plans, and support programmes Help pupils access the curriculum through differentiated activities Support sensory regulation and structured routines Encourage independence and positive behaviour Work closely with teachers, SENCO, and external professionals Monitor and record progress, providing regular feedback Follow safeguarding and inclusion policies at all times The Ideal Candidate The successful candidate will: Have experience supporting pupils with autism in a school or similar setting Be patient, calm, and empathetic Have a strong understanding of autism and inclusive practice Be confident supporting sensory, communication, and behaviour needs Have strong communication and teamwork skills Be reliable, resilient, and adaptable Be committed to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing Experience using visual supports, structured routines, or autism-specific strategies is highly desirable. However, the school is also open to candidates with transferable experience and a strong desire to work in autism support.
