Job overview As a valid member of our MDT you will play a key role in the care of our patients from the moment they arrive in theatre until they return to the ward. You will assist in the preparation of the operating theatres prior to surgery and support our qualified staff during procedures. Although no previous experience is require, you must be enthusiastic and compassionate with a methodical approach to your workload. Advert The Operating Department Support Worker provides assistance to registered professionals within the perioperative care setting in the speciality of orthopaedics, carrying out patient care under the direction of a trained nurse or theatre practitioner, ensuring that a high standard of care is maintained. Through their close contact with the patient, the Operating Department Support Worker plays an important part in meeting the needs of the patients before; during and following surgical or anaesthetic procedures. Detailed job description and main responsibilities Key Duties and Responsibilities · Assist with prescribed patient care according to the care plan and under formal supervision of qualified staff. · Contribute to the preparation and maintenance of a safe environment for patients undergoing surgery or treatment. · Participate in the movement and handling of patients and moving of items complying with the Moving and Handling Policy at all times. · Assist the registered practitioners in carrying out required surgical and anaesthetic procedures including participating in safety checks within the operating theatre. · Produce accurate legible written documentation where required. · Enter information into the electronic theatre information system. · Receive and pass on information by phone and by using the hospital bleep system. · Operate and maintain equipment after appropriate training. · Record blood loss during operating procedures. · To be familiar with role in emergency procedures after appropriate training. · Check, change and handle medical gas cylinders after appropriate training. · Participate in replacing stock to agreed stock levels, bring forward stock in use and communicate any shortages to appropriate senior staff. · Undertake cleaning within the department including the use of cleaning equipment. · Handle and transport laboratory specimens according to Trust and local policies. · Undertake the handling of clean and soiled linen in Theatre Department. · Undertake the handling of clinical and other waste in Theatre Department. · To maintain confidentiality of information received. · Behave with courtesy and integrity to patients, relatives, carers and colleagues. · Demonstrate the role to less experienced staff. · To be flexible and respond to changes in health care practice, learning new skills and duties that may be considered suitable for the employee to undertake. · Undertake mandatory training according to Trust policy. · To be aware of the responsibility of all employees to maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, staff and visitors in accordance with the Health and Safety policy and Procedure. · To adhere to the trusts Policies and Procedures at all times. · Assist throughout the department with any other duties that may be required.
