 Rate: £400 - £500 per day outside IR35
Shifts: Monday – Friday – Core office hours
Orion are seeking an experienced Contract Principal Designer to support a critical 3-month production line installation programme. This role demands strong CDM 2015 compliance leadership, rapid integration into existing project structures, and proactive health and safety coordination.
Principal Designer Responsibilities:
Serve as the appointed Principal Designer under CDM Regulations 2015 for production line installations.
Lead all PD duties throughout the pre-construction and installation phases, ensuring full compliance.
Collaborate closely with the Principal Contractor to maintain smooth coordination and communication.
Identify, eliminate, and manage design-related health and safety risks specific to line installations.
Quickly familiarise yourself with existing design documentation, plans, and project teams to avoid delays.
Ensure all PD deliverables are aligned with installation timelines for production lines and associated assets.
Review and challenge design risks across machinery, structural/civil works, and M&E systems.
Compile and manage a comprehensive Health and Safety File for future maintenance and operational use.
Transfer all relevant Pre-Construction Information (PCI) and residual risks to the Client and Principal Contractor.
Coordinate with Designers and the Principal Contractor to ensure consistent health and safety communication throughout the project.Principal Designer Required Experience:
 • Proven experience delivering FMCG installation projects (e.g. filling lines, vessels, automated production systems).
Must have experience with Design software like Solidworks, Autocad ETC...
Demonstrated success acting as Principal Designer under CDM 2015 regulations.
Strong understanding of the Principal Contractor’s responsibilities and how they interface with PD duties.
Technical expertise in industrial installations, including mechanical, electrical, and structural systems.
Ability to rapidly interpret and integrate project documentation and team structures.
Experience in preparing Health and Safety Files and managing Pre-Construction Information.
Excellent stakeholder communication and coordination skills across design, construction, and client teams.
