Clinical Nurse Specialist Urology

We would like to extendan invitation to join our well established Urology CNS team across the countyof Worcestershire, if you feel you have the right skills and qualities. To workclinically as a urology nurse specialist providing a range of nurse ledclinics, support the service and support the department with expert knowledgeand skills. Identifying and directing patient referrals from the GP and othersources to the most appropriate clinic. To provide a high standard of evidencedbased care for patients with urological conditions. To provide teaching andclinical expertise across the hospital site and community teams with a passionfor improving quality.

To offer ideas to improve the quality of service to ourpatient based on Trust Values.


Main duties of the job

To be able to rotate through a range of nurse led clinicsi.e. erectile dysfunction, lower urinary tract symptoms assessment andplanning, intra-vesical clinics, catheter clinics and TWOCs. To be able tointroduce new clinics if appropriate and required.

Visiting patients on the wards to offer support, phonesupport, post op major phone support.

Job responsibilities

The post will incorporate the Clinical Nurse Specialist(CNS) role dimensions of expert clinical practice, education, leadership,management and research.

To liaise with all key members of the multidisciplinary teamto advise and support colleagues in the delivery of specialised patient careacross professional boundaries.

To undertake nurse led clinics and to be responsible forexcellent standards of nursing care to patients through the planning.

To work autonomously to deliver specialist clinical careappropriate to the needs of the patient group and based on principles that areresearch based and which enhance the quality of patient care.

To contribute to training and education within specialistarea.

To promote an innovative and progressive attitude to thecontinual improvement of patient care through reviewing the evidence base andembedding this in practice through engagement in research activities.

To apply you will be expected to have experience andknowledge of urological conditions and treatments including continence issues,treatments for benign diseases and urological cancers. You should also be anexcellent communicator and be able to demonstrate the ability to inspire andmanage change. You should be willing to learn and be an active member of ourteam of urology nurses. We are a supportive team of nurses dedicated tocarrying out high standards of care and developing the skills and knowledge ofall its team members. Due to promotion of the current post holder, a NurseSpecialist opportunity has become available in the urology nursing team. We areseeking a motivated, proactive nurse with vision and maturity, and knowledge ofurological conditions and their treatments. The successful applicant will berequired to work in close collaboration with the urology and uro-oncologyin-patient and out-patient team as well as other health care professionalswithin the acute and primary care setting. To apply you will be expected tohave experience and knowledge of urological conditions and treatments includingcontinence issues, treatments for benign diseases and urological cancers. Youshould also be an excellent communicator and be able to demonstrate the abilityto inspire and manage change. You should be willing to learn and be an activemember of our team of urology nurses. We are a supportive team of nursesdedicated to carrying out high standards of care and developing the skills andknowledge of all its team members.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain a professional behaviour at all times and promote apositive image of Worcestershire Acute Hospital NHS Trust at all times, in linewith World Class Care values.

Ensure that the needs of patients are placed at the centreof care delivery, thus achieving trust and national standards for clinicalquality, safety and patient experience.

To participate in and manage caseload of patients withinnurse led clinics.

To provide an expert urological nursing service coveringbenign urological disease, continence, erectile dysfunction. Includingurodynamics, LUTS assessments, Intravesical treatments and painful bladdertreatments.

To liaise effectively with other members of themultidisciplinary team, in patient services, other specialties, colleagues inprimary care and outside agencies.

Collaborate on all aspects of quality management related tothe nursing and clinical area.

Assist in the evaluation of the service and patient care,including monitoring of patient experience.

Assist with the implementation of improvements in nursingpractices within own areas of responsibility in line with local and nationalagenda and patient feedback.

To be professionally and legally responsible and accountablefor all aspects of own clinical and professional activities.

To recognise the limits of own clinical knowledge and skillsand to seek medical support whenever needed to provide safe, effective andtimely patient care.

Taking account of national policy, to ensure that core,specialist and advanced nursing practice is developed to meet service need,through the use of research and evidenced based practice, ensuring they arelinked to the clinical governance and patient safety agendas.

To promote new and innovative forms of nursing practice,backed up by relevant education and training plans, to deliver care thatenhances access to the department and specialist services.

Maintain awareness of relevant research, evaluations andaudit, and act on this information in collaboration with colleagues tocontinually develop the service.

Direct and support nursing staff in their commitment toadvancing nursing / clinical practice through the use of research and theimplementation of evidence-based practice.

Act in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council(NMC) Code of Professional Conduct and Scope for Expanded Practices for Nurses,Midwives and Health Visitors.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR PATIENTS

To ensure high standards of care are given to all patients,monitoring this through spot checks and clinical quality indicators outcomemeasures.

To obtain patient and relative feedback by undertakingpatient surveys.

To be responsible for the assessment of patient care needsand the development, implementation and evaluation of plans of care, ensuringhigh standards of evidence based care. To ensure communication with patientsand significant others is established, ensuring empathy and reassuranceregarding, assessment, care and treatment.

Be accountable at all times for ensuring that safeguards arein place for patients, in particular those adults or children at risk.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR POLICY AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT

Ensure that all staff act in accordance with Trust policiessuch as Infection Prevention and Control, Confidentiality, Health & Safetyand Equal Opportunities.

Assist with the development of, and implementation of, localand trust wide policies, procedures, guidelines and protocols.

To be aware of the research process and current trends.

Resolve any concerns about levels of care or incidentsinvolving patients escalating to the matron/senior sister and reporting via thetrusts incident reporting system.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL AND PHYSICAL RESOURCES

Accountable for general ward environment needs, being alertto possible sources of cross-infection, maintaining safe and clear walkways andbed areas, ensure fire exits remain clear and equipment and supplies are storedcorrectly.

Accountable for the safe custody, storage, usage andrecording of all medication including controlled drugs in accordance with TrustPolicy.

Accountable for efficient and economical use of wardsupplies.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR LEADING AND MANAGING

To act as an effective mentor and preceptor and supportother ward staff in performing this role.

To develop skills in understanding the management andmonitoring the non-pay budget.

To develop skills to be able to investigate accidents,incidents and complaints, implementing corrective actions where necessary andin consultation. To liaise with the Senior Matron and Complaints and ClinicalRisk Management Teams appropriately.

To ensure there are effective communication systems in placeto enable staff to keep abreast of developments in the organisation.

To contribute to the planning and organising of serviceimprovements.

To actively participate in own appraisal/personaldevelopment plan with the appropriate supervisor.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR INFORMATION RESOURCES

To be responsible for ensuring confidentiality andsafekeeping of patient records.

To ensure that there is effective communication systems inplace to allow staff to keep abreast of developments in the organisationincluding unit meetings.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT

To contribute to the development of evidence basedguidelines/policies relating to speciality.

To be aware of the research process and current trends.

Through the appraisal system, ensures own training needs areidentified and mandatory training is kept up to date in conjunction with thelead nurse.

Attend and contribute to staff meetings, including teambriefings and reads information as required. To be responsible for developingand sustaining own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness.

To lead teaching and education programmes and assist inmentoring student nurses and nursing assistants.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Infection Control Infection control is everyonesresponsibility.

All staff, both clinical and non-clinical, are required toadhere to the Trusts Infection Prevention and Control policies and proceduresand The Health and Social Care Act 2008: Code of Practice for the preventionand control of healthcare associated infections and make every effort tomaintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing therisk of Healthcare Associated infections. It is the duty of every member ofstaff to take personal responsibility for the prevention and control ofinfection, as laid down in the Trusts policies and procedures which reflect thestatutory requirements of the Hygiene Code.

To work in close collaboration with the Infection ControlTeam.

To ensure that monitoring of clinical practice is undertakenat the agreed frequency.

To ensure that the ward environments are cleaned andmaintained to the highest standards; ensuring that shortfalls are rectified, orescalate as necessary.

To ensure that all relevant monitoring data and issues areprovided to the Directorates Governance structures.

To ensure that all staff are released to attend infectioncontrol-related educational sessions and staff with specialist roles.

However, the duties of the post may change and develop overtime and may therefore be amended in consultation with the post holder.


Person Specification


Experience

* Relevant experience as a band 5/6 in urology setting. Assesses patients, plans, implements care. Experience in a defined area of nursing care. Develops specialised programmes of care / care packages and provides highly specialised advice concerning care. Provides specialist education and training to other staff and students. Working towards receiving patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems and makes an assessment of their health care needs, based on highly developed nursing knowledge and skills. Experience of working with an MDT process. Supervises students and ward nurses. Work is guided by broad occupational policies. May undertake research, lead clinical audits in own area. Competent catheterisation skills.
* Screens patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness. Carries out specialist nursing procedures e.g. symptom management, urodynamics. Intravesical therapies.


Qualifications

* First Level Registration, to Evidence of significant continuing professional development. Evidence of management experience/training. degree level. NMC recognised Teaching/Assessing qualification Willingness to undertake HCA module at degree level.
* Masters Degree in advanced practice. Health care assessment module at degree level.
