Job Description: Planned Maintenance – Assistant Engineer
Pay Rate: £17.60 per hourLocation: Town Hall Extension, Albert Square, Manchester, M60 2LAContract: Temporary
Role Purpose
Reporting to an Engineer or Team Leader, the Assistant Engineer will support the development and delivery of planned maintenance schemes and assist with day-to-day coordination of site activities. The role involves supporting surveys, data validation, contractor liaison, and documentation—helping ensure programmes are delivered safely, efficiently and to a high standard.
Key Responsibilities
* Assist in identifying and assessing carriageway and footway sections requiring maintenance.
* Support Engineers in reviewing and validating Gaist roadscape intelligence and other condition data to assist programme development.
* Help prepare outline designs for maintenance schemes, including resurfacing, reconstruction, micro-asphalt, and surface dressing.
* Assist in preparing cost estimates, schedules of work and traffic management requirements.
* Coordinate with contractors during scheme delivery, including:
o Supporting site inspections
o Recording progress
o Reporting issues
o Ensuring safe and effective delivery of works
* Prepare documentation for TTRO/permit applications and support stakeholder notifications.
* Maintain accurate records, drawings/plans and site notes, reporting progress to Engineers and Team Leaders.
* Work collaboratively with colleagues, contractors and stakeholders to ensure successful programme delivery.
Person Specification
Essential
* Practical experience or demonstrable knowledge of highways maintenance and resurfacing activities.
* Good site assessment skills, including measurement, condition recording, and identifying constraints.
* Awareness of resurfacing and preventative treatments, with willingness to develop technical understanding.
* Understanding of traffic management principles and Temporary Traffic Regulation requirements.
* Experience liaising with internal/external stakeholders (e.g., Network Management, TfGM, residents, contractors).
* Understanding of permits, public notices and general highway works processes.
* Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and maintain detailed records.
* Good communication skills (written and verbal).
* Competent IT skills with the ability to read or produce basic drawings or marked-up plans.
* Full UK driving licence and ability to travel to various sites across Manchester.
Desirable
* Familiarity with MCC systems such as SAP and GMRAPS.
* Understanding of highway maintenance contract environments.
* Experience with GIS mapping and mobile data capture tools.
* Working toward professional membership (e.g., CIHT, ICE).
* Knowledge of Greater Manchester network operations, including TfGM and UTC.
