Randstad Sourceright, a leading provider of RPO & MSP Recruitment Services is currently recruiting for a Project Engineer to work on a Substation project for Balfour Beatty.
The Role:
We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer to support the mobilisation and delivery of a new-build substation servicing a major Data Centre and EV Battery facility. While the current phase is heavy civils-focused, the successful candidate will act as the technical lead for Power Engineering. You will work alongside the Project Manager, adopting an "Assistant PM" mindset to coordinate multiple work packages, ensure National Grid compliance, and oversee the project through to the M&E phase.
Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership: Specify and implement engineered solutions for substation delivery, bridging the gap between civils works and future M&E requirements.
Package Coordination: Manage 2–3 work packages simultaneously, ensuring seamless integration between civils, earthing, and OHL requirements.
HSQE & Compliance: Write/review RAMS and ensure a relentless focus on "Zero Harm." Conduct safety tours, audits, and ensure all safety documentation is controlled and issued.
Subcontractor Management: Provide direct instruction and progress monitoring of subcontractors to ensure contractual milestones are met.
Reporting & Progress: Maintain accurate daily diaries and project records; prepare internal and external progress reports for stakeholders.
Commercial Support: Assist in managing the Risk Register, identifying cost recovery elements, and ensuring expenditure remains in line with the project budget.
Key Skills and experience required:
Sector Expertise: Proven experience working on Substation projects is essential. Knowledge of Overhead Lines (OHL) is a distinct advantage.
National Grid Standards: Significant experience on National Grid projects is required. You must demonstrate a clear understanding of NG certifications/accreditations.
Earthing Specialist: Demonstrable experience in Earthing Control or Earthing Application (ideally moving towards or holding EP/ECP accreditations).
Management Mindset: Ability to think like an Assistant Project Manager, seeing the "bigger picture" and coordinating across multiple functions rather than focusing on a single task.
Problem Solving: A solutions-based approach to managing risks and change processes on-site.
Qualifications: Valid CSCS card and SMSTS (or equivalent)
Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to negotiate with subcontractors and report competently to senior management
