Overview
As University Hospitals Bristol and Weston (UHBW) has recently expanded the Gastroenterology service based at Weston General Hospital, we advertise a Fixed Term Consultant in Gastroenterology with General (Internal) Medicine. The initial period is seven months from September 2025 to March 2026, with anticipated extension pending financial approval. The main site is Weston General Hospital with expected cross-site working with Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) as the service integrates across UHBW, to be determined through job planning.
The successful candidate will develop special interests to extend the spectrum of gastroenterology services at Weston and support services being developed in the department. The postholder will undertake general gastroenterology clinics and support the endoscopy service with upper and lower GI procedures. Weston General Hospital is JAG accredited and has maintained this for over 10 years. Inpatient responsibility for the gastroenterology ward is on a 1:4 rotation, with commitment to the emergency endoscopy rota (1:6) and the G(IM) on-call rota out of hours (1:11).
Main duties of the job
The Gastroenterology team at Weston General Hospital has expanded to four Consultants and provides a full range of general Gastroenterology services, with specialist Hepatology offering a visiting outpatient service to North Somerset and surrounding rural areas. Outpatient services are managed by the Division of Medicine and endoscopy sits under the Division of Surgery. The department maintains a strong education tradition recognised by HEE, attracting high‑quality candidates to training posts. Ward work is supported by 3 middle grades (1 HEE SpR and 2 clinical fellows), an IMT and/or SHO with F2/GPST, 3 F1 doctors, and an experienced Physician Associate.
The post is advertised as a 10 PA post, with flexibility for more or fewer sessions. Appointment will be part of the 1:11 current consultant on-call rota.
Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of their CCT and ideally have NHS experience.
