Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full‑time post to join a highly motivated nursing team. You will need to have proven clinical skills in respiratory nursing with a keen interest in teaching to join a well‑developed and supportive multidisciplinary team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. We are seeking a Clinical Nurse Specialist to provide comprehensive, state‑of‑the‑art care for patients with respiratory disorders. The candidate should have prior experience managing all aspects of care delivery for patients in both acute and outpatient respiratory settings, and be able to apply and develop clinical knowledge in accordance with national and Trust guidelines.
Main duties of the job
* Review patients in in‑patient and ambulatory settings, provide advice and treatment, and manage independently run clinics.
* Follow up and monitor in‑patients on a daily ward round to support nursing and medical teams.
* Review patients in the Emergency Department to assist in preventing admission.
* Provide after‑care for patients living with respiratory conditions and manage home oxygen care.
* Advise and educate healthcare professionals on respiratory care delivery.
* Teach and manage university‑accredited specialist courses.
* Offer strong leadership to ensure compassionate, dignified, and respectful care for all patients.

Job Description
In line with the Trust's Annual Business Plan you will provide high‑quality advanced expert nursing practice and cost‑effective service to patients requiring routine and emergency care, from outpatients to pre‑admission through to discharge and review at home.
* Care and manage patients with COPD & asthma in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.
* Provide patient education & information about their respiratory condition.
* Provide diagnostic and interpret tests, including spirometry, to ensure accurate treatment plans.
* Work as part of a COPD/Asthma MDT to provide integrated service for patients requiring oxygen therapy.
* Collect data and complete BTS audits in conjunction with the Respiratory Team.
* Provide teaching for Trust staff with a focus on NIV.
* Provide a highly specialist nurse‑led service within the wider respiratory team.
The Division aims to provide an environment conducive to the ongoing development of all staff and advancements in the quality of service by ensuring provision of high‑standard training, teaching and clinical care within the acute and community settings.
Key Result Areas & Performance
* Demonstrate clinical expertise within the speciality and work autonomously, managing own allocated clinics and seeking guidance when necessary.
* Co‑ordinate specialty care within the Trust/CCG, including outreach clinics.
* Become an essential member, point of contact and resource for the multidisciplinary team and patients and carers.
* Carry out diagnostic/therapeutic interventions as an independent practitioner, interpret and write reports, and commence further treatment based on findings.
* Perform complex therapeutic/investigational procedures under indirect supervision of the Consultant, ensuring safe practice and provincial guidelines.
* Develop new skills and deliver an expert high‑quality nurse‑led service.
* Provide ongoing follow‑up care and support (home visits, telephone support, nurse‑led clinics, outreach clinics).
* Initiate structural interdisciplinary development and progress of the Clinical Nurse Specialist role.

Person Specification
Essential – Experience
* Senior clinical experience at least 1 year within Respiratory at a Band 6 level or above.
* Experience assessing patients using spirometry and interpreting results.
* Experience in practice guideline development.
* Audit and research experience.
* Evidence of clinical leadership qualities.
* Experience using primary and secondary healthcare teams to support patient discharge.
* Ability to clinically lead and direct staff.
* Experience in patient advocacy.
Desirable – Experience
* Lead an audit and/or research study.
* Presentation and teaching experience.
* Caseload management.
* Leading a service.
Essential – Qualifications and Training
* RN / RM – Part 1.
* Relevant specialist course or similar.
* Mentorship course (supervising and assessing).
* Advanced training/skills in invasive/therapeutic/diagnostic procedures relevant to Respiratory.
* In‑depth knowledge of respiratory anatomy and associated disorders.
* Knowledge of conditions, management and treatment.
Desirable – Qualifications and Training
* MSc level learning.

* National qualification for care of patients with COPD, asthma and the spirometry course.
